Go to Start, control panel, Sound and double left click on Sound. When that opens up it should show a list of your sound devices and which is is set to be the default playback device. You can also change recording and playback volumes here or unmute. Depending which device is set as default the media player should playback on that device.

Can i suggest you try the following : Go to 'start', 'run',then type 'cmd', enter (if using vista, start, all programs, Command promt) type in format x: (x: refering to the drive letter that your usb device is assigned to), then hit enter. It should give you a warning about erasing all data, etc.

The value 'WriteProtect' should be absent or set to '0' and when you try to format it you have to format it as FAT16
