Open the Dell wireless Utility and uncheck the box at the top that says "Let this
tool manage your wireless networks". You may then need to open
Network Connections, right click the Wireless connection and select
Properties, click on the Wireless Networks tab and check the box next
"Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings".
There is a strong chance that the wireless card inside is bad. I work at a computer repair shop and work mainly with laptops. It isn't uncommon for wireless cards to go bad, before their "time". Usually Dell's have access panels on the bottom of the laptop where you can see the wireless card. It will have 2, sometimes 3 small wires plugged into it. Usually dell' use Dell brand cards, which are really repackaged Broadcom wireless cards in most cases. In your situation, write down what the model number is, go to another computer, look up that model on ebay, buy one, replace it.
You will have to have the external compatible cd drive for the C400 or find create a server to push the new os on. email me at [email protected] and I may be able to help you further. Please note, not all the cd drives that say they are compatible are compatible so be careful before you buy one.
There is a reset switch on the router you have at home. Use a paper clip to press and hold the reset button in for a few seconds to allow the router to reset. This will reset the router to default settings and you should be able to connect to it at this point. Log into the router and set up a securty key so that no one else cans steal your internet
Go to Network conections and enable the wireless device. OR, you may need to open up the wi-fi door and check the model# on the wi-fi card, and type in the model# followed by 'drivers' in a Google search to acquie the drivers, too
Do you see a green charging light when you plug it in? If not, i would reccmond scraping it for parts and sell it on ebay, craigslist or somewhere else.
