Acer extensa 5630ez won?t turn on.

Hi there, my acer extensa 5630ez won’t turn on.

Only by removing the battery, power supply and cmos battery it turns on with only the power supply.

However when it is on state and add the cmos battery, turning off by power button it stays off, only when the cmos battery is removed it starts directly when the power supply are plugged.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
The old cmos battery was 3.04 volts; however I have tried a new one who gives the same result.
Memory module is properly seated and also tried another one.

Personally I think it?s some mobo problem, because by volt measuring of the power switch it?s reacts deep in the circuit of the motherboard.
Also, when I try several attempts to power it up, sometimes it starts up.
Another finding is that when the notebook is in sleep mode it starts up by the on button, only by shut down it failed.

  • Anonymous Mar 09, 2010

    Solved,

Remove at the bottom of the mobo R138 (1K near Q11, near the fan) and see if it start normal.
If so change R138 to 4K7

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Hi. For an image, see... http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/105/a...

Remove the r138 and see if its start, if so leaves it away, (in my case that was the best solution).

  • Anonymous Mar 12, 2012

There are always other possible situations which the notebook refused to go such as.
    1. The memory module.
    2. Cmos bug (reset it by removing the Cmos battery).
    3. Battery pack is defective.

Of course there are other possibilities such as a button that sticks.
Examples are the sleep mode button, on / off button and / or lid switch.

The solution I have given applies only to the symptom.
Only by Removing the battery, power supply and cmos battery, it turns on with only the power supply.

If that does not work, then there is something else going on.
Try it without the above, but so also without hdd etc.

    Good luck.

Can you give a location of R138?
Is it on the easy side? E.q. the side of the motherboard wich is accessible by removing the bottom plate? I see Q24, located close to CPU. If possible, post a picture of R138, with some components visible.

Thanx, R138 is on the TOP SIDE of the motherboard, close to the fan, as posted by mrxx74 , So you have to remove the topcover....
So solution posted by mrxx74 works like a charm :)

Hello all Extensa 5630EZ owners with intermittent power on probs! I have just completed this repair and it has also been successful for me. Basic steps taken to repair:
1: remove ALL power/battery and ALL peripherals
    2: remove bottom DIMM cover
3: Remove middle cover (this is the long plastic cover over the speakers, the power switch is part of the assembly). Remove power switch connector at the power switch end. Put middle cover to one side.
4: Remove Keyboard by removing 2 screws at top and gently prying the 4 tabs loose, then remove ribbon cable from MB (this connector requires you to slide the brown tab forward to release the ribbon cable)
5: Remove LCD screen (you don't have to physically disconnect the WLAN antenna cables. I couldn't see how to from the top so I left them connecting the screen and body and just manipulated the screen

6: disconnect the ribbon cables for the quick launch buttons connector, mouse buttons and trackpad connectors and then the normal speaker connector.
6: Flip laptop over and remove 14 or so screws from bottom side, then flip back upright and pry off the top cover carefully (in case you've forgotten to disconnect any switches!).
    7: Desolder R138.
8: Reassembly is a reversal of disassembly.
9: Switch laptop on and enjoy!

Thanks to the OP, great fix for an otherwise decent laptop.

This also worked for a laptop I had in from a client. Left the resistor of. How you found this solution without having the circuit diagram for the motherboard is a mystery to me. Well done!

You would need to replace the cmos battery first to make sure it's not a cmos battery issue. I dont care if you think it's brand new just go get another one. Its been known that Acer notebooks are picky with certain cmos batteries or atleast half dead ones and will not turn on if they are.

Also make sure your ram is poperly seated because that may me another reason why the notebook will not power on with what it needs to work with.

    Thanx

The removal of the r138 resistor worked a treat :-) I didn't use a soldering iron i just took a very small craft screwdriver, placed it under the resistor and prised it off.
    Many thanks.

Thanks a lot mrxx74, your solution worked perfectly.
But how on earth did you find that R138 was guilty ? It's amazing !
I found many explanations to access the motherboard here :

Thanks again for having saved my laptop's life.

If it were the RAM I would expect three quick beeps...

since I didn't hear anything at all I would suspect the CPU didn't come up at all....
Then again the battery doesn't normally unhook the CPU.....

Acer Extensa 5630EZ does not start

Not really sure--could be a motherboard problem. But you say the computer is less than 3 months old. That means it's still under warranty--so call their tech support. You paid for support when you bought the machine, so I would use it.
