Monitor goes black - green light stays on

The picture is perfect when the screen is on, but it goes black very shortly after startup, and sometimes goes back on and off in no apparent pattern. Sometimes I can manipulate it back on for good by turning the system on and off a few times but it is very unreliable. Any clue as to why this occurs and how it may be fixed?? I have a Phillips ambilight 42 plasma (42PF9630A/37) that is 2 years old. It turns to a black screen after about 4 or 5 mins of normal watching. The power light stays green then it tries to turn itself back on several times. The picture is perfect and there seems to be nothing wrong until the black screen.

It sounds like a bad connection, solder or otherwise. You can probably
get the symptoms to come and go by lightly tapping the monitor cabinet.
Don't continue to do it though, it may make it worse over time. A
competent repair shop should be able to handle this type of repair.

My screen is black, why do I not have a picture?
Answer Antenna is not hooked up to television.

  • Make sure that the antenna cable is correctly connected to the television. If it doesn't work there appears to be no signal.
Problem is caused by television broadcast
  1. Push 'INFO' button.
  2. If the screen shows channel number (1, 2, 3, etc) try another channel. Not all channels broadcast at all times.
  3. You may have a signal problem. Contact cable provider or local broadcaster regarding the specific channel.
Television is in EXT or SIDE mode, and there is no external source provided, so screen mute (black screen) is activated.
  1. Push NEXT SOURCE button on the remote.
  2. On the screen appears all sorces.
  3. Press the UP button to switch to the TV mode.
If you are using an accessory device (DVD, DVR, or VCR), be sure the device is on and running.
Blank screen when connecting to the accessory (DVD, STB, PC) device via HDMI to HDMI.

Answer
  • Make sure the cable is well connected .
  • To check which connection is selected, Press the i+ button on the remote control.
  1. When you see Blue mute / blank screen and the i+ display does not indicate any video resolution indication then there is no valid signal detected.
    • Make sure the HDMI output of the accessory is valid by changing the video output resolution to a resolution which the TV can handle.
  2. When you see a blank screen and the i+ display shows a video resolution indication then the connection is correct.
    • The blank screen is caused by the accessory device and not by the TV.
    • To detect and remedy the problem caused by the accessory device, check the instruction manual of this device.
  3. If the problem remains : reselect the HDMI external source input by changing to the other HDMI input and back to the connected HDMI :
    1. Press AV on the remote
    2. Press up and then ok
    3. Press AV again
    4. Press down and ok
    5. The compatibility check process between TV and accessory device will start over again.
  4. Reset (switch off and back on) the TV and also reset the accessory device.

Television is probably malfunctioning due to electrostatic discharge.
Try resetting the television by unplugging it from the power outlet for
    10 seconds.

Make sure that the power cable on the display and
the VGA cable with trailing audio cables are connected correctly (use
the originally supplied VGA cable.) between 'MONITOR' of the TV and
        'VGA1' of the display.

Make sure that the display is switched on.

SOURCE: I HAVE A PHILLIPS 42'' PLASMA 42PF9630A-37

The only thing I can suggest outside of taking the television to get repaired is a hail-mary firmware update. To be honest, the firmware update process is fairly complicated and lengthy. You can download the firmware and find instructions for it here.

http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/cpindex.pl?ctn=42PF9630A/37&scy=US&slg=AEN

Look on the right hand side for firmware information.

This TV is likely outside of its 1 year manufacturer's warranty so you would have to pay any and all repairs. Before deciding to do a repair you might try calling Philips. For a while they were offering a service to customers like yourself with out of warranty units. They would offer to sell you a more up to date model at a discount. I'm not sure they still do this but its worth a shot.

Hope that helps!

Monitor come on for a few seconds then goes black, green signal light stay on green. can you help

the monitor may be losing the back lite. take a flash light or bright light and shine it at the screen after it goes black. can you see a faint picture? if so the back lite has failed. usually the cost of replacement exceeds the cost of a new monitor but there are a couple of web sites that detail the replacement of the "ccfl" cold cathode flouresecent light.

Monitor comes on, I can see everything perfect then goes black

"Most" newer monitors will let you know if the are no longer receiving a signal. Sounds like the backlight is burnt out. Try getting a bright (LED works best) flashlight and shining it at the screen at all angles to see if you can see any of what you were doing. If the backlight is on the fritz, either return it on warranty or buy a new one.

Microtek 997M monitor doesn't stay on...

The inverter is the most common item to fail on a LCd monitor. Capacitors usally fail the most. Are the tops of any of them popped up. If you had any shorted transistors the fuse would probably be blown. Usally labeled F1. I would replace all the capacitors first and go from there. Capacitors are cheap.

Monitor goes black - green light stays on

Junk the TV. Mine does pretty much the same thing.

I'm thinking that our 'tremendous savings' at Circuit city was, in fact, the way Olevia unloaded these duds. These TVs should not be doing this. I tried working with the company, and they lied to me. That's why the theory about 'defective model dumping.'
