Technics 1200sl pitch control

Technics sl-1200 major pitch control issues. Intermittently when turning on the unit both the 33 & 45 light come on & the platter spins @ mach 5. Im sure it's related to the On/Off control.

I have exatly the same problem, when the turntable is swithed on the platter spins at a really fast speed, the strobe light doesn't come on & both the speed lights come on. I wondered if this is worth fixing or i'd be better off selling it as spares?

There seems to be 2 issues with this unit. Usually when the platter speeds up very quickly, one of the IC (integrated circuits) are faulty and needs to be replaced. However, I've never seen the 33/45 lights come on in addition. So, perhaps the issue started with faulty 33/45 switches, and it then caused a short to one of the IC's.

This will have to be professionally serviced, as it is not an easy fix. There are various circuits on the main board which control the drive, so it's a matter of diagnosing which is the culprit. The 33/45 switches will also need to be tested/replaced.

Just bought a new technics sl-1200 turntable and the pitch speeds up and down causing music to sound funny....

You will need to check your belt for wear. Lift felt on platter and check belt tension. It may need replacing. To replace, simply lift platter section of the unit, taking note of the belt position. replace and your problem will be solved

MY Technics 1200 Rotates Out Of Control. What needs To Be Done To Fix?

It sounds like you need to replace the belt. If it's too loose, it will not maintain the proper speed.

Pitch Control Problems

More than likely the pitch needs to be calibrated. Although not very hard, I would suggest getting this done by a professional, as it does require opening up your turntable.

Here are instructions - TECHNICS PITCH CALIBRATION

If you cannot perform this, then find yourself a good technician who knows what they are doing.

If this does not work, more than likely either your pitch control, the pitch gain, or one of the IC's need to be replaced - at this stage, only a qualified service tech can help you.

Good luck!

When i turn on my technic 1200 turntable it the lights flicker and looses audio sometimes

Hi, i doubt the 2 are related as the T 1200 doesnt have a preamp, only speed control.

Maybe try checking to if there are any loose ground wires in the turntable (ONLY if you are comfortable to open)

Other than that it the sound issue might be either on the head, or on the phono outs not connecting properly.

If the speed is remaining good, then the issue is just with the LEDS themselves, maybe loose solder, if it is changng pitch as well, then dry joints in the power supply/pitch control

Hope that helps

Platter changes directions or stops

More than likely either an issue with an IC (integrated circuit) on the main PCBoard such as IC301 (Pitch Control IC) or one of the Regulators like Q2 and Q3. While your at it, you might want to check IC201 (Turntable Control IC), and IC101 (Turntable Drive). Doesn't sound like anything is busted just yet, if it comes and goes. This means something is about to fail, and your just seeing the failure in action.

Good luck.

Speed control issue

Not sure I understand what you need done. The 1200 has a pitch control, which allows you to control it's speed. Do you want to disable the 33/45rpm function, and assign that to the pitch control, so instead of controlling pitch, you control the RPM? This will put quite a strain on the drive circuits of this unit, but it can be done. Although, not an easy modification, as you will have to modify multiple resistors and IC's on the main board. This should only be professionally done.
