If Wii gives Disc Read Error, first step you need to check is to try
another disc or clean the exisitng disc. This will confirm that problem
is with either Wii or Disc. If the console itself is giving disc read
error then it needs to be repaired. You may check out DIY Wii Fix Guide,
that will show step by step information to fix the problem yourself. It
also gives information on fixing many Wii Related Problems, so its a
kind of Wii Problems Reference Fix Guide

One of two things has probably happened and is the case 9 out of 10 times. Your drive may have gone bad either due to a chip failure or a laser failure. It's also possible if the unit has gotten hot that the connection to the drive isn't making good connection anymore. This happens a lot. To fix it you would have to open the unit up. I don't recommend this if you have never worked on consoles or other electronics before. If the unit is under warrenty send it in for repair. Otherwise you would have to pay for the repairs. You can also sell the unit as broken on ebay and generally recover quite a lot of your money.

If you are good with repairs of electronics you may choose to open it up and do some troubleshooting. There are several places on the internet that outline how to open the wii and how to troubleshoot it's problems. If you decide to go this route you will void any warrenty you might have. However sometimes this is about the only solution people have without spending money for Nintendo to fix it.

Well, one problem could be is that your lense may not be clean. If you are not super careful with your discs by putting them in the case all the time when your not using them, they could gather dust, dirt and scratches. I recomend that you purchase a Wii Lense Cleaning Kit from a Nintendo retailer and clean your Wii's lense. Just and idea that might work,

Well were did you bought your Wii ?

Is your Wii "PAL" or "NTSC"
[PAL] is for Asia and [NTSC] is for North America and Japan only.

IF YOU Wii IS [NTSC] THEN .....
This means if you bought your Wii in North America or Japan then your Wii is [NTSC], This means your Wii will only read Wii NTSC games and game cube games. Which has to be NTSC since your Wii in NTSC. And if you put "PAL" games in the NTSC Wii, Your Wii will not be able to read the disc since [PLA] is copied games.
[NTSC] is original games and DVD's.

IF YOUR Wii IS [PAL] THEN .......
This means your Wii can paly copied games. As if you can make
a copy of an original games and play the copy of it with the
[PLA] Wii. This is quite better to have a Wii which is [PAL]. Because your Wii can play copys of original's. Getting games will be super cheap !

So I think your Wii is a [NTSC] like all in NORT AMERICA and JAPAN. And your games are copys of originals.. So your Wii is not reading the copy. You will need to by originals in any local game store so that your Wii can read & paly original games.

Then there has to be a problem with your Wii's DVD drive Lens.

You might not want to open the Wii to fix the DVD drive, because your  Wii might have warranty. If you open the Wii then your warranty for the Wii will be
useless, so try to contact Nintendo Wii to for warranty.

Hi I'm Joshua. I got my Wii for an early birthday gift. Then I got Super Smash Bro's Brawl. After a few days, I almost completed it in adventure mode, but then in the middle of my game a white screen came up and said " Could not read the disk. For details read the console manual." But I tried everything, but it still said the same thing. I bought it at CIELO VISTA MALL. For those who don't know where that is, it's in El Paso Texas. I did everything else in the game but it was fine. What Happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very likely cause is the lens especially if it happens with a brawl disk. Look thru Nintendos's web site. They have a form you can email them. They will then send you a pre-paid shipping label to send the Wii and the Brawl Disk and repair them free of charge.
YAY I just got mine back it took about a week.

Has your Wii had anything spilled on it? If so, you need a new Wii. If not, think about how long you had your Wii. I had a Wii for a year and it stopped working right for all my games eccept Sonic And The Secret Rings (one game!). I soon got another Wii. The problem was gone.

My brand new console cannot read any disc.

If Wii gives Disc Read Error, first step you need to check is to try another disc or clean the exisitng disc. This will confirm that problem is with either Wii or Disc. If the console itself is giving disc read error then it needs to be repaired. You may check out DIY Wii Fix Guide, that will show step by step information to fix the problem yourself. To install wii fit

"Unable to read the disc" / "Disc could not be read" / "Eject the Game Disc" Error Message.
If you are getting one of the above error messages:
  • Ensure that you are properly loading a Game Disc. insertdisccorrect.gif
    • If your console is placed vertically, the disc label will face to the right.
    • If your console is placed horizontally, the disc label will face upwards

  • If you know you are inserting the Game Disc correctly, but are still have the same problem with only one game (or if you only have one game), try cleaning the Game Disc by following the disc cleaning procedures

  • If after reading the above information you are still unable to play a game disc, please call 1-800-255-3700 to discuss available options.
