Dell Studio 15 Laptop...one week out of warranty...dvd drive accepts the disc (tried several), makes clicking noises for a minute, then spits the disc out. Passed all diag tests.
Try booting comp using the windows disc -if it still makes clicking noise and spits the disc out update the firmware. if it still acts the same way, replace it.

Hello,
First off, you might need your windows operating system disc.
1. Turn on your laptop
2. Start tapping on F2 once you see the Dell Logo
3. Once your inside BIOS go to Boot options or Boot menu
4. Change the boot priority, make the CD the top priority.
5. Once you're done with step 5, insert the operating system disc into your CD/DVD drive
6. Press F10 (Save and Exit). The laptop will then restart.
7. Check if it will boot from the OS disc, if it does, then there's no problem with your optical drive. If it did not boot from the operating system disc, then there's a big chance that your CD/DVD drive is already broken.
Note : if you're not satisfied with the steps above, you might want to try 2 operating system discs. You don't have to install them on the laptop, we just need to use it to verify if the CD/DVD drive is already broken and needs to be replaced.
With my experience as a technical support, usually this kinds of symptoms(the things that you mentioned) says that the DVD drive is already broken or defective.
Hope this helps!
Try to take the disk out of the computer using the following option
Normally
the studio laptops have soft eject for the CD and they dont have a
button.. Press and hold the Fn key and then press the F10 key to eject
the cd.. Another way is get into computer.. Right click on the DVD/cd
rom drive and click on eject... This will work....
If its still not working callup Dell to fix the issue since it might be a issue with the DVD drive even
The clicking noise is the drive head banging up against the stops. It is doing this because it has lost its home position. You should try a few other cd's or dvds. You may notice it will read a cd but not a dvd. If it clicks on both then unfortunetly it needs replacement. If it read cd but not dvd's then it may work for a while longer but will need replacement sooner or later.
This is common on laptop drives. If you have warrenty they should fix it. If you don;t this is something you can fix yourself. The drive is held in by one small phillips screw. Unscrew that and the drive slides out. Slide the new one in and put the screw back in and you are done and fixed.
A replacement drive should be available from several sources. Prices should be from $45 to $100. Check with Dell as well and compare the price and shipping costs.
If you do a search on google and bing using 'Dell Studio 17 replacement parts' you should find several possible sources. Here is one to start you out.
You can find these on ebay as well. But you may take a bit of a chance that you are getting a good one. Ebay can be the cheapest but if it doesn;t work then it isn;t much of a savings.
this happens while on windows right? so try outside windows. what i mean is restart computer then keep tapping on f2 to boot in bios setup. then from there insert the cd/dvd check still has the problem. if yes they follow these steps http://tinyurl.com/ya7q9b
still not fix try to loosen the screws from the bottom part of the laptop. if still fails then have dvd drive replaced.
you can see a slot on the right side of the laptop. you need to put cd in to that. you cannot see any CD Drive coming out of this model. Its a slot CD/DVD reader.
