Patch for tiny holes in fiberglass tub (8 yrs. old)

Hi, Our fiberglass tub (8 yrs. old) has some small holes in it, which we discovered after it drained the tub into our family room below. The plumber advised us to contact a tub repair service and have it sanded and patched. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

From my own experience I had a crack in mine. I sanded the area I wanted to patch. I bought a fiberglass repair kit from the hardware store. I mixed the hardener with the resin and applied it without the cloth. Make sure you have good ventilation and don't get it on your hands. After it dried I sanded it smooth it didn't look the best so I hit with a little spray paint. I have since replaced the tub but it held until I was ready to do that. A couple of years. Hey if this helps give me a vote please.

My Intex PureSpa has a small leak in the outer skin the book says 'Clean and dry area to be repaired' then 'Remove the patch backing paper and fit patch'

If that unit is fiberglass, go to an autoparts store and get fiberglass repair kits. Be mindful of the solvent being very powerful and extremely flammable.

Hi I have pond which I fiberglassed with several layers of sheets& resign only to find water was leaking through the layers that hadn't suck together is there a solution to fix unstuck layers. Sandro

Fiber glass once filled with water will have to be emptied and completely dried out in order to make a 'same' material patch. meaning, using more glass and resin to patch the hole(s). The area needs to be cut and roughed up to have the resin 'stick' to the old resin. This may require you to completely remove the 'pond' form just to get to the leak. (if the fish needs a temporary home then you might try the method I've described below.) If you can locate the exact leak spot and able to get it dried out then it may be possible to use water proof 100% silicone to patch the area. This does require a 24 hour dry/cure period. The clear stuff is the same used on glass aquariums so it should be okay to seal the leaks. Check with your pet store for advice. I don't know about 'FLEX-SEAL" products, but you might call them for advice before using it.

Depending on the shape and size of the pond you can (temporary) cover it with a contractor's plastic drop cloth (use at least 3.5 mil). I don't even use anything as permanent as fiberglass as the aquatic animals (carp, turtles, plants, etc.) tend to grow beyond the capacity of any 'fixed' pond that I've set up. I just use hollow concrete 8" x 8" x 16" tiles. (though 6" x 6" x 16" will work too) Lay out the shape you want and cover with 2 sheets of liner. 6 mil works the best but even a 3.5 mill will last over 2 years. Don't go over 3 bricks high as the water will cause a bulge and collapse the wall if it's too long. I keep the longest wall at 6 blocks max. Better to use several small rectangles than one really long one.

How do you do small body panel repairs on rust spots?

If it's just surface rust with no holes use a grinder and clean the spot to bare shiny metal. Use some spot putty and completely cover the metal. Then sand it down smooth and put some primer on it. When you sand it down pay close attention to your edges. Sand them into the paint so that you can't feel the difference between the patch and the old paint. After the primer dries use a spray can and paint the spot because primer will absorb water and you will have to do the repair again.
If the spots have small holes in them you should get a can of body fill called "Tiger Hair". It has fiberglass in the compound and will easily fix small holes. Use this before the spot putty and sand it smooth. Then cover that with a thin layer of spot putty to fill any imperfections, primer and paint.
If you have holes bigger than 1/2 inch then you should be able to get small wire mesh patchs at your local auto parts store. These will stick to the bare metal after grinding and you can put your tiger hair over that. This will be a bigger patch. It will need to be about 3 times bigger than the hole you are filling to be relatively unnoticable.
This won't give you a show car but it should keep inspectors off your back. Hope this helps.

Hole in subwoofer

Hello colinomalley,

You can repair the hole using a flexible permanent adhesive. If all of the cone is still there, I wouldn't use a patch. I'd just put the jagged edges back together. If part of the cone is actually missing, you will need to patch it. Thin fiberglass cloth works pretty well. Use painters tape that will remove easily and cover the hole from the rear of the speaker. Cut the fiberglass cloth about 1/4" larger than the hole and attach it using a silicone based flexible adhesive. Allow it 24 hours to set up completely and then remove the tape from the rear.

A product called "shoe goo" works very well for speaker repairs. It's strong, flexible, and permanent.

Hope this helps.

2 inch crack in shower pan fiberglass floor

I repair such fiberglass shower pan liners in the Philadelphia > NYC corridor. Generally, this fix should cost you between $150 and $500 depending on the size of the shower and how many people in your area do fiberglassing. I would strongly suggest having the entire shower basin re-fiberglassed as opposed to trying to patch the hole. However, a good fiberglasser should be able to fix this in a couple of hours for a few hundred bucks. If you are in our area, visit www.CFINJ.com and contact us. Brian
