GAS OR ELECTRIC DRYERS HAVE OVER HEAT PROTECTION COUPLERS. (looks like quater with wires). One of them is breaking down. Get the make and model number of the unit and look on the internet for the replacement part. If you can get the unit apart you will see up to three of them.
check the electric coil spring. It may be burned open. If so then twist the two half together. Sometimes coins or other objects land on the coil and burn it open
Did you clean all the venting inside and out? Also, there is a flap inside right before the vent. It opens to allow air and closes to heat up and close air off. Sometimes this flap can get stuck
Check your dryer vent (the entire length) for lint build-up. Check that the vent is opening properly (the flapper type can come loose and block air-flow).
Those are the most common reasons for an inefficient dryer.
I hope this helps.
Cindy Wells (we have had the vent get blocked by the flapper)
it could be the igniter or glow coil as it is sometimes called. if it is glowing orange in color it may only be igniting once in a while as it is on it's way out. the igniter needs to glow white hot in order to light the gas every time.
Usually dryers have the exact opposite problem where the heat does not come on. Because most dryers have thermocouples (rated at 150 & 185 degrees) to prevent the dryer from getting too hot. You may have the blower fan come off of the motor. Check and see if you have air moving out of the vent. Also unplug the dryer and take the back off and inspect the area where it is getting hot. It may be some wires touching the case. Sometimes you can see the problem or smell something getting too hot. Either way be carefull. A dryer that overheats is a fire hazard!
