Tip & How-To about Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition

How to install vista from pendrive

Its very difficult to install windows vista if you are not having a DVD drive, Especially when you are planning to upgrade your windows xp system you would like to see how vista looks. So you need to install it and see. Requirements: USB pen drive 4GB or more
Windows vista DVD

Step 1: Download HP USB storage format tool from here and install on your computer.
Step 2: Once you finish installation, double click on HP USB storage format tool and format your pen drive in NTFS
For this, select NTFS from File system option and Check quick format option and click on start.

While doing the format the data stored on your Pen drive will be lost. You keep a back if needed. Press YES on the warning message

Once the format finished you will get a message with the details and Click
on OK

Now insert Windows vista DVD in to DVD Drive and go to command prompt.
For that go to start -> RUN and type CMD and press enter or OK

You will see the command prompt with black back ground
Now you need to change the directory to your DVD drive where you put the windows vista DVD.

For that type G: and press enter (here I am using G because in my system DVD drive letter is G. So you need to check your DVD drive letter and type accordingly)

So the directory will change to G:>
Now type cd boot and press enter
Now the interface will be like G:boot>
Then type bootsect.exe /nt60 h: (where h is the drive letter of your pen drive)
Now you will get a successful message like below

Now you can close the command prompt and copy all the contents from the windows vista DVD to the pen drive

It will start copying now

Once it’s finished, you need to restart your pc and access the bios of your system and make first boot device as USB pen drive.
That’s it, now you can see installation starts from the USB pen drive.

Steps to remove Windows 7 without affecting saved files or data: 1. Boot up and log on to Windows XP desktop. 2. Insert the Windows 7 DVD installation disc into CD-ROM or DVD-ROM optical drive. Or, mount the Windows 7 on any virtual drive. 3. Run Command Prompt, or you can click directly to Startmenu -> Run command. 4. In the command prompt write the following command and hit Enter: [DVD Drive Letter]:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force The step will remove the boot menu to select operating system to start. 5. Remove Windows 7 disc and restart the your computer 6. The computer will boot up with Windows XP installation partition. 7. Manually remove files and folders of Windows 7, including Windows, Program Files and Users folder. 8. On the root system folder of Windows XP, delete Boot.BAK and BootSect.BAK. The two files are remnant backup leftover files of previously installed Windows 7 bootloader, but is no more useful for Windows XP. Tip: NT52 is the MBR which is used by Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, while NT6 is used by Vista. So, if you're planning to remove Windows 7 in Vista/7 dual boot system, change the NT52 in the command to NT60. Shortcut: You can even format the Windows 7 partition straight away, and then start the computer with Windows XP Setup CD to repair the system partition. Tip: Always use the highest edition of Windows 7 installation DVD/CD to do the repair, when startup repair the boot record after eliminating an installed operating system from dual-boot.

If you have installed vista as a multiboot sytem, then you can do the below: Otherwise you have to do as tom19511 said:

Uninstall Windows Vista on a multiboot system
Applies to all editions of Windows Vista.

You cannot uninstall Windows Vista. However, you can change the code that starts the operating system (often called the master boot code), and then remove Windows Vista from your multiboot system and return to Windows XP or Windows 2000. You will need your Windows Vista installation disc for this procedure.

Before you begin, back up your programs, files, and settings. Removing Windows Vista is an advanced procedure that could result in losing information stored on your computer. For information about backing up data, search Help and Support for "back up."

1) Insert the Windows Vista installation disc.
2) Click the Start button getopencontent.aspx?assetid=4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33&documentset=en-us&renderkey=xml, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. getopencontent.aspx?assetid=18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b&documentset=en-us&renderkey=xml If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3) Type [DVD drive letter]:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force and then press ENTER.
For example, if the DVD drive letter is F, type f:\boot\ bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force.
4) Eject the Windows Vista installation disc.
5) Restart your computer.
Your computer will start in the previous version of Windows that you have installed.
6) Delete Windows Vista files and folders, such as the Program Files, Users, and Windows folders, manually.

Note: You can also remove Windows Vista by reformatting the partition where it is installed, but do this only if that partition is not the boot partition. Reformatting the boot partition might make your computer unable to start.
