The fireplace glass and surrounding wall felt very hot even though the gas fireplace is off. I turned off the pilot light and it is now cooling. Do I need to also turn off the gas?

If its the type of fire with a constant pilot flame, the top and surrounds will get hot. Obviously, its wasting gas but on some fires, it can be a pain to relight the pilot, hence some People leave the pilot on during the winter season and shut it all down for summer.

My gas was recently shut off while a stove was installed. Now my gas fire will not come on.

May be air in the line, might take a while to purge it. You did not post any information about the gas fire, which I assume to be a fireplace? Set the gas valve back to off, wait a minute and try the pilot again you may have to hold it down for a long time. Check the thermocouple too. If it is electric ignition then check the flame sensor

My gas fireplace shuts off after burning about five minutes - both main burner and pilot shut off.

Most fire place burners have an oxygen depletion sensor on them nowadays. If you can restart it after a while, a few minutes or so, and shuts off, it is probably the oxygen sensor. The owner lights fireplace and shuts the door, and the fire depletes the available oxygen and the fire will start producing copious amounts of CO which is a hazard. Most fireplaces have a fresh air supply available to provide combustion air but needs to be opened for the fireplace to work properly. Check the manufactures recommendation as to the proper installation of the fireplace furnace.
Hope this helps

Marco gas fireplace shuts off

This an easy fix. What you must do is remove the dust from the pilot safety. I use rust buster from ace hardware to gently flush the hole. If ther is no hole just shoot a tiny drop or 2 into the pilot burner where the flame comes out. Blow it out (I use a piece of tubing). The problem is the dust drops the pilot flame to a point where it won't heat the thermocouple hot enough to jold the magnet and after 30 minutes she quits. THIS is a picture of where to clean the ODS pilots in your rig.

Marco gas firplace

I have a Model 792864B. Before you attempt to light the pilot light - make sure that any wall control switch or remote control for the fireplace is in the off position. Locate the gas supply line. There should be a gas supply valve to turn on the gas supply. The valve is usually painted a different color than the supply line like blue, green or yellow. Open the valve by pivoting the handle to be parallel to the gas line, usually counter-clockwise. When it is closed it is at a 90 degree angle from the supply line. Locate the pilot light assembly - this is the pilot light. There should also be a red or black ignitor button and a black or green valve control knob with the words "on" "off" and "pilot" on it. It may be located inside a black box, mine is marked heatolator, that has a lift off top. Lift off the top of the box. Push in the valve control knob and turn it until the word "pilot" is in line with the arrow (my arrow is red) or indicator line. While pressing and holding in the valve control knob - it presses in about 1/4", press the red or black ignitor button repeatedly (once per second) until the pilot ignites. Once the pilot is lit, continue to hold the valve knob in for about 30 seconds and then slowly release. The pilot should remain lit. If it remains lit, press in and turn the valve control knob to the "on" position. The on/off wall or remote control switch should now light your fireplace. If the pilot doesn't ignite, turn off gas supply valve, wait about 5 minutes and try it again.
