Blackberry Pearl automatically deleting messages

Occassionally my blackberry pearl will delete all of my text messages and call logs. It has started to do this at least once a month if not more and is becoming very obnoxious. Do you have any idea what could be causing this and how to stop it?

I thought it was designed that way to save memory, due to the many other applications that run on the device. Anyone know whether there's a software upgrade on the horizon aimed at fixing the problem?

  • Guada Apr 06, 2008

I have the same problem, not only is it deleting my messages before I can save them, I can hear an alert on receiving SMS messages, and they are deleted before I can even read them along with anything else that is sitting in the active screen if I am in the middle of conversations. I doesn't delete saved messages, only the ones on the active screen. In fact, on my birthday, there were numerous messages not received by me, and people were showing me their messages the day after.

I'm assuming the sender is being charged for the SMS even though I don't read it, aside from the fact my non-response makes me rude. . . that's not cool!

I am having the same problem. Very annoying. What do you mean by pull the battery? take it out?

  • Anonymous May 01, 2008

when i send a text to my friends...and when they text back it shows that i received it but then it deletes right away before i can read it...

  • Anonymous May 04, 2008

My problem started off about a month after geting my pearl, i didnt question it too much and figured out on my own that if i pull the battery out and replace it then it would temporarly fix the problem. Soon it was deleting my messages several times a day and as of yesterday no amount of taking the battery out will allow me to recieve messages. I have tried all of the suggestions here including freeing up as much memory as possible etc. I'm afraid that i might never purchase a blackberry device again as this has really screwed me over for my work in the past two days.

I recently went to call someone on my blackberry pearl cell phone, when i pessed the recent calls button it came up blank, i was very confused but didn't see it as a big deal.

it wasn't until i found that my txt messags were all deleted that i got pissed.

    help please.

    this is very annoying.

  • dirthg Jul 07, 2008

It has gotten so bad that it happens every couple seconds. Everytime i send a message or someone calls it deletes it immediately.

  • Anonymous Jul 16, 2008

I'm having this same problem, but I know it's not a memory issue, because I haven't even had the phone for 24 hours! I only got my phone at 1pm yesterday, and sometime between the time I went to sleep and woke up, it erased all my unsaved messages and call log, even though I have it set to save "Forever".

  • Anonymous Jul 17, 2008

I just got mine 4 days ago and I think I am experiencing the same problem, and also a new problem has arisen some of my messages that I read aren't deleting whenever I delete them.... I dont know what the hell to do, this phone is kind of complicated and yet its not that great... I had a piece of **** chocolate LG phone before that I had many many issues with and thought if I got a blackberry everything would change but, apparently I am wrong after reading all of this I'm beginning to think I made a mistake and I am getting really fed if with verizon....

  • Anonymous Jul 20, 2008

i've had my blackberry pearl for a week and it started deleting the messages just today. I can't even see the text before it erases it.

  • carinabina Jul 24, 2008

i can't tell you how many times this problem has f***ed me over. blackberry seriously needs to do something to fix this, because it is ridiculous to lose your text messages and missed calls.

  • scotthoman1 Jul 26, 2008

Periodically my pearl 8100 will delete all of my call logs and unsaved text messages. It will also fail to receive text messages randomly. It will delete them whether i see them or open them. If i have opened them within 10 minutes it may be gone. It won't be deleted by using other apps or accessing other features of the phone as far as I can tell.

It will remain in this state for a period of days and then revert to normal without any recognizable or noticeable changes. The only possible cause that i can come up with is that an ultra low battery will induce this state. I thought for a while that it could be brought back to normal by powering off and then on again but that only seemed to work once.

  • pey_jeb Jul 29, 2008

i have an 8130 i have the same problem--it won't show me a call log and it deletes text messages. also it won't even ring at this point--it just shows me that i have missed calls but then won't show me the missed calls. and now it has started giving me the little hour glass everytime i touch a button and it takes forever for the hourglass to go away--i cant even check my voice mails because the vm system kicks me out because i have to wait so long to put in my password due to the ever present hour glass!! and i can't download rinhgtones directly from my phone without a bluetooth and i don't want a bluetooth i want my plain old phone back if this is what i have to deal with

  • wendymay88 Jul 30, 2008

I hate my blackberry pearl! This is the second one I have owned in 3 & 1/2 weeks and the thing is a peice of ****! The second post down explaining the ever present hour glass and the inability to check voicemails because of it is exactly what my two blackberry pearls have done.I have no phone book so I cant call people and it doesn't ring at all, it erases text messages and incoming calls immediately. It's a horrible contraption much like using a terrible old peice of **** computer. It gives me a migraine and since I am still under 1 month, having owned 2 now that have done the same thing I'm returing it tomorrow for a different phone!

  • Anonymous Aug 03, 2008

I have the verizon version of the Blackberry Pearl and just recently, it's been deleting my call logs almost instantly and deletes text messages before I can even recieve them. I've searched through my phone and tried to change many options to see if it would change but I have no clue what happened or what to do to fix it. help!

My balckberry keeps deleting my call logs. What can i do?

  • Anonymous Aug 13, 2008

my phone randomly deletes my call log when i have a missed call.

  • Reichertd Sep 01, 2008

My Pearl randomly deletes my messages as well. The only way to fix it is to take the battery out and restart it. But I never get the deleted or saved messages back. I am on my third Pearl since January. Always different problems. They always tell me "they've never seen that before"....Yea right!! Isn't there some kind of Lemon law on phones? I would just like them to switch me to a different model, but Verizon won do it! It's ********!

  • stallioxl007 Sep 06, 2008

    that's messed up

  • Anonymous Sep 08, 2008

    Yep, mine too.

  • poettreez Sep 08, 2008

blackberry pearl: if i don't save messages, they are deleted- sometimes while i'm reading them. the entire call log and the entirety of texts erases every so often. yes, i manage memory, and back-up, and re-boot (battery removed, reinserted), and have 'phoned verizon for tech advice on many occaissions. they give me a run-around about updated software being available "soon" (past few months, hmmm...). this phone is not what i was told it would be and has been more frustrating than useful. often am unable to send/ receive texts/pics. i would repeat most of what is already written...

  • Anonymous Sep 11, 2008

Same thing on my 8130. Deleted everything. Still happens. Stupid Verizon

  • rschryber Sep 16, 2008

Once I read an email it will only be in my open email box for a few hours then it disappears.

  • Anonymous Sep 21, 2008

Same problem as everyone else, sometimes the calls delete w/i 30 seconds if not sooner.

  • Anonymous Sep 22, 2008

yeah it sucks almost everyday at night it will start deleting all my texts and i check my memory and it shows i have 0 bytes left. so it makes me pissed off.

  • tamzinbbz Oct 11, 2008

mine does exactly the same, and it's just started doing it. i've had it since may, i haven't changed any of the settings or anything. it's really annoying me, im going to ring up and see if they know how to fix it, otherwise im going to make them change my phone to a different version

my blackberry deletes all my messages and calls every other day! it really makes me mad.. ive tried everything!! i need help what to do when hat happens?

  • Anonymous Oct 23, 2008

it automatically deletes new texts before i can read them

  • Anonymous Oct 23, 2008

Damn it! This problem seems to be widespread and from what I've read on this page nobody really knows why. I have T-mobile and my phone deletes txt & call history on and off, a lot recently. I've cleared up memory space but hasn't solved it. I just tried taking out the battery. If this doesn't work I'll have to come up with a vodoo dance...or switch phones.

My Pearl 8100 delets my loggs and messages also. Anyone know how to fix it?

  • Anonymous Nov 04, 2008

It tells me i have new texts but wont let me look at them then i go to check again and they are all deleted, same with my calls.

  • missmynokia Nov 19, 2008

I have the 8130 bb pearl. I've did the all of the recommended memory saving, and controlling things to my phone. All this was to no avail. The f *%$#&* thing still delets my text! Seems to be only late nights on weekends to!!!! WTF Please someone fix this!! I miss my Nokia :(

  • Anonymous Nov 20, 2008

i too am having the same problem with the phone deleting messages and call logs. after many calls to verizon they have had me delete programs i am not using, save all pictures to the memory card-not the phone, delete emails as they come in and have told me to remove the battery every other day and allow the phone to reboot like a computer. i find this all very annoying considering this is blackberry and i paid a **** load of money for this phone. They have told me that the programming to run the phone takes up 40% of the memory on the phone, therefore, you must free up all the space you can inorder to have enough memory to hold ur texts and call logs. it is such a pain, they needed to make the memory on the phone bigger obviously considering it can not support all the programs it comes with and work properly. so try those few things and see how it helps.

  • diana r Nov 27, 2008

I have a blackberry 8130 and it is the most worthless P.O.S. i have ever had, it does the same **** as everyone elses on here, deleting my call log and texts, it used to do it on rare occassion, but now the piece of **** does it several times a day. I have pulled the battery numerous times, and that doesnt do a damn thing for this problem. I also have an SD card and that didnt do a damn thing either. This phone just sucks and i will never buy another blackberry, because apparently its not only the pearls. Verizon doesnt give a ****, they are just a bunch of **** heads anyways, and black berry doesnt give a ****, they're just in it to make a buck. **** em both.

  • lacey13 Jan 28, 2009

Mine is doing the same thing. I miss a call and it won't tell me who it was. Sometimes i'll recieve a text and not be able to open it. If i am lucky enough to read the message its gone 5 mins later. Does anybody know if the curves do this to?? I went into telus and they said its doing this because i am saving my info to the phone and thats just what the pearls do. He says i need to move it to the memory card and everything will be ok. When i went back to where i originally bought it the guy said " This is a common problem. Known as the PEARL PROBLEM" if they know about this problem they should be fixing it dont ya think i mean you pay a good amout of money to own these with there data plans and different features and the piece of junk doesnt even work....

  • ddes377 Mar 03, 2009

My memory is no where near full-- I have only a couple pictures on my phone, no music, etc. I set my messages to automatically delete after a couple weeks, but occasionally my blackberry pearl deletes nearly all my sms's and emails, leaving only a couple completely random messages behind. The last time this happened the memory magically came back after a week and a half, but I need this to stop happening... Does anyone know what is the problem? Thanks! :)

  • Anonymous Mar 05, 2009

Same exact problem.. with a 2 gb SD card. Can't seem to get it to stop.

  • Anonymous Mar 13, 2009

For the love of God this is NOT a memory issue. this started happening to me a year ago (deleting my messages and call history/log) and only one message would be in my box saying something about my wireless device being registered with a network. it stopped happening for a long time, but a year later, i'm to the same problem. it's weird how i have read that some of yours does it at certain times (like weekends)... i don't see how it could be a memory problem if i don't even have apps on my phone. i use it for basic things. call people, txt people (and not very much), or check the internet quickly. that's it. i aksed cingular about it a while ago and they didn't have an answer for me. they gave me their card with a number on it to call. they said it was a registration issue... i haven't called because it hasn't happened in a while (until now)...

  • crackberry18 May 07, 2009

I have been having the same problem since I bought the phone!!! It deletes SMS, BBM and Call Logs!!! I also know of two other people who I work with who have had the same problem. One women got her carrier to replace it with the Curve and she has not had any problems to date. It is so frustraiting and I dont think that there is a way to fix it, I believe that it is a memory issue and that the phone itself is not reliable!

  • Anonymous May 09, 2009

my blackberry pearl is deleting my messages calls and emails. i will send the message and then exit out and i will go back and it will delete it. i take the battery out and put it back in that usually works the first few times but not anymore.

  • EricaRhea1 May 21, 2009

my blackberry pearl just all of a sudden started deleting my call log and text messages i dont know if it is something i have done or if its the phone but it is getting on my nerves and i cant get throught to cellular south!!!!!

  • Guada May 11, 2010

Thanks, but I am managing the space and memory closely and the problem still happens. Pulling the battery out just delays the inevitable automatic deleting of anything unsaved. AND it only happens on weekends I noticed, even though I may pull the battery during the week.

Does anyone know if it has anything to do with the carrier doing maintenance? Maybe its that . . but my boyfriend bought me a regular cell phone because he thinks the blackberry

is too unreliable . . . thanks everyone for the advice though

TRY THIS...Press and hold the up/down bottom left key. While holding this down press L then 5 then L then 5 again. an event log will appear now press the menu key scroll down to CLEAR LOG. USING THE TRACK BALL PRESS THE BALL AND DELETE THE EVENT LOG. These are cookies and will destroy your memory which is very small anyway. Do this from time to time and it should solve your problem. Good luck to all......

I work for alltel and i've found that removing the battery for a short period of time fixes the problem, even if only temporarily.
UNLESS it is, in fact, a memory issue, which seems to be the case for some blackberry owners. it really should be required to get a memory card if you own one. i know, for my pearl, i couldn't even access the video camera without one, so i splurged and bought the 4g, which has been a HUGE help.
and, like a computer, if you keep a TON of applications running (without closing them completely) it uses memory, and will cause the phone to lag, which causes it to automatically free up space (eg: text messages/ call logs) so, make SURE you exit programs completely and that should really make a difference.

The reason this happens to all Blackberry devices is due to a built in feature called Low Memory Manager (LMM). What this does is once the device reaches a certain amount of flash memory (lash memory is used to store BlackBerry smartphone applications such as Messages, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, MemoPad, and third-party applications), the device will automatically delete low priority items such as cached data (frequently accessed information).

Then medium priority such as very old email messages and out of date calendar entries if more memory is needed.

Then if memory gets too low the LMM causes the email application to delete email on a last accessed basis and continues until there is enough memory to where the phone gets back to the minimum amount of memory. Call logs, text messages, and pictures follow as a result.

I recommend this: Delete messages as read/replied to so that you don't have to worry about the memory. Get a memory card and save any multimedia (pictures, songs, etc.) to it.

In other words manage your memory to prevent this from happening.

The reason others have not experienced the issue is because they may not receive as many text or email as you do. They may not have as many pictures saved, etc.

Hope this helps all who have this issue or at least shines some light on the situation.

Mine has done this lots of times, its because your text messages are automatically stored to your sim card. if you change it to phone memory it will store more. also if you clean your memory log regularly by pressing...... hold down "ALT" and press "L" "G" "L" "G" release the "ALT" button and press menu, clear log. you will have more memory onto your phone. :) x

I also heard from Verizon that one of the ways to inadvertantly fill up your memory is to not use the "Close" option in the menu, when you're in an application like mail, calendar, browser, etc. Just hitting the back button will keep the app running, until you pull the battery.

So their advice was to use the Close option instead of the back button, to delay or avoid filling up the memory.

Buy a 2 or 4 gb memory card ($20 at WalMart) and then go to the Blackberry web site and download the latest software upgrade (Do the memory upgrade first). Have two units, less than 8 months old and this cured both of them.

I called At&t about my blackberry deleting my messages and call list, they told me it's the phones way of telling me my memory is full. So I bought one of those memory cards and haven't had any problems with it since then.

I'm relieved to see that others have had this same problem, because I was convinced that my phone was possessed! From my research, it appears that there isn't really a solution:

  • Blackberry Pearl's have some major issues needing to be ironed out
  • and it is wasting everyone's time.
Compared to the computer world, the Pearl is the PC (can also stand for Piece of ****, might I add), and my solution is EVERYBODY BUY AN iPHONE!

I solved my auto deleting by first going into where your email are listed, then select the menu button and scroll to the bottom to open the options folder. Then open the General Options folder. At the bottom of that list it should say how may days to keep messages. I selected forever and I have had messages add up to close to 1000 emails. Try and see if this helps

That's a memory issue. A hard reset staves off the inevitable, but it will keep happening until some things are deleted and space is freed up. These are basically small computers, and like computers, can only hold so much.

  • Jacqueline Gibson Apr 24, 2008

It's weird it's only on weekends. Double weird that it's not memory. I recently acquired and 8120 and it's my job to know, too, about BlackBerry. I'll see what I can find out.

I had the same problem with it deleting all my call logs and messages plus eventually it started turning itself off or resetting itself randomly. I would back it up every week and then restore it whenever this activity started again.. Usually a few weeks to a month later.. The only way I got it to stop was to remove the memory card. I don't know if you all have a miniSD card in your phones, but you might want to try backing the phone up, removing the card and then restoring everything. You obviosly wont have anything that was on your memory card or be able to use the video camera and your overall camera photo storage will be limited, but try it and see if your phone stops deleting messages and call logs.. worked for me, until i put the memory card in again last week after 6 months of not using it and sure enough im back here trying to find out why this happens... good luck

Take the phone and place it on a hard and sturdy surface. Take a tack hammer and beat the **** out of it repeatedly. I tried this once and the problem was solved. Well and I felt better. F U Verizon

My pearl doesn't even have a delete option for the languages or the media that came on the device itself...anyone have suggestions for that? I have the deletion problem about once a month as well, all MMS/SMS texts are delted unless they've been saved as well as the call log being wiped out as well; however, i noticed that my emails DON'T get deleted regardless whether i've saved them...it's perplexing, huh?

I resolved my problem by deleting images/videos that were on the DEVICE memory itself (not on the SD card). Those images/videos take up space. I set my phone to save future images/videos directly to my MINI SD card. I hope this works for everyone.

Funny, my curve doesn't have these problems and i've filled that thing up with themes, apps, and other things. Pearl2 = big memory leak issue.

So I have the pearl and it been giving me the same problems. So I've tried everything that has been suggested. It's not a memory problem. I have sync everything to my computer n cleared my memory. STILL happened. I have Tmobile and they have a BB upgrade site. they believe its the software that needs to be upgraded. so I downloaded and uploaded new software into my BB Pearl and guess what... still deleting my text messeges and my call log. Actually my phone is acting more crazy now then ever before.
So Im sure what it could be because I feel like I've tried it all. I'm now just going to complain to TMOBILE and get a free UPGRADE out of them. Cause really this is bull$#%@... good luck everyone!!!!

From your phone, dial *22899 to re-program the phone.

Actually a way to keep msgs (it wont on your memory card) is go into options, advanced options, and delete all the unused languages. if you go into options, status and check your file free space and its below 150000 your msgs will be deleted right off the bat. i had the same problem but now it works for me

Get the Blackberry company to create an update because it's a glitch in the piece of **** phones

I've had that same issue.
Occasionally it would delete all my messages and recent calls but that only happened when it froze.
Which usually happened when i was trying to send a MMS {media msg}.
I just make sure that i'm not running anything before I send a MMS.

Last night I was sending ringtones to my sister and it froze up my phone.
It deleted every message accept my saved ones.
and All calls.

It would let me know that i had a message but delete it right after.
Taking the battery out and putting it back in worked fine for me.

What does "pulling the battery" mean? literally taking the battery out of it?

i'm having this same problem - deleting messages - sometimes even before i get to read them. it will still vibrate or make the notification noise, but when i check the phone, the messages are gone. i have a 6 gig sd memory card, so i know it's not a memory issue. unless the sms and mms messages are stored on the device not the memory card. maybe that's the solution, but i cannot find a setting to allow my mms and sms to be saved to my memory card.

I just noticed recently I have an icon called Memory Cleaner, and it seems to have helped when I run it . . . I haven't pulled the battery recently either

Its not memory. i and getting a SD card wont fix it, i have a 2 mb and barley anything on it....

and its happening to me right now and has been for the last 2 days...and its Tuesday! so it not just the weekends...

this is driving me crazy and ive been to verizon 3 times and they are aware of the problem and allegadly; research in motion-the company that runs BB is coming out with a patch for the problem...according to when verizon told me, it should have been out right now. this is soooo frusterating! especially when I'm back home and seperated from my boyfriend and friends!....

i really dont know a solution but i think BB owes us some free phones...

btw i have a pearl with verizon; what about you guys?
my dad has a BB not the pearl though and he hasent had any issues at all, and i also have many friends with verizon pearls as well; who have no idea what the hell im talking about lol....

As Acid82 suggests above, this problem can be resolved by installing a high capacity SD card.

I put a 1gb card in mine and the problem of disappearing SMS history and Call Log, that had been bugging me for weeks went away completely.

However, I'm still experiencing a problem whereby SMS messages aren't received at all occasionally. My wife sends me several SMS per day and at least 1 or 2 don't reach me at the first attempt.

If anyone knows of a solution to this I'd appreciate some info (my wife still doesn't believe me) :o)

Does this solution stop if you get a Mini SD card?

A

You have to pull the battery once a week to prevent this from happening. Blackberry is aware of the problem, but there is no settings to stop it from happening. Every carrier is going to give you some crazy *** answer but the bottom line is nothing can prevent it.....however, pulling the battery every week will slow it down a great deal.

Okay, so: if I'm reading all these posts right, when I take out my 8120 battery and put it back in, and the ring RETURNS, that means I'm having a memory issue?  Mine was doing that thing where it stopped ringing but I could still see the calls coming in on screen.  Annoying.
Any possibility this is 3G network related?  I heard iPhone users with this complaint whenever they were on a 3G network, and t-mobile is going 3G in my area now!!!

SOURCE: Blackberry Pearl automatically deleting messages

I actually had this problem a LOT in the past, it got so bad that I would get a message and it would INSTANTLY delete. Before I could even see who it was from, it would be gone. Then I looked for hours trying to find a solution, and found one. I haven't had the problem since, unless I have nearly a month's worth of texts in my phone. The problem is that your device memory is too full. If you have an SD card in your phone, I highly recommend moving any photos on your device memory over to the card. If not, then I HIGHLY recommend getting one, they are wonderful. If you do not have an SD card, and your budget is too small to get one, then delete any pictures on your device memory you dont need, or copy them over to your PC so you dont lose them, and try and keep your memory as empty as possible. Also if it happens a lot and bugs you, then every couple of days go in and empty out your message inbox also.
If this doesnt help then I dont know.

Blackberry Pearl 8120 - sms, email and call log being deleted

On the Status screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, the File Free field indicates low ,if the device memory is full then these things will happen on your device,so to never have this problem delete unwanted applications. To delete run desktop manager and select application loader, select the applications that are not frequently used and remove them. Also keep the messages for a month or two because these mails will be there in your mail box.

Random deleting

This means that you have too much memory in your phone, so it automatically makes its own memory. To fix this you need to delete some of your pictures and ringtones to add memory. I used to have this problem too! Hope this helps!

Lots of memory on blackberry pearl, but still deleting

Check to see how long your mail is configured for retention.

Open your in-basket. Press the menu button, and select "options".

Scroll to the bottom and the last option is "keep messages". You can set this for anywhere from 15 days to forever.

Texts and call logs deletes themselves every couple minutes

This is a known software issue on the Pearl, which can be fixed with a software update. You can download the latest software (currently the 4.5 software) from either www.blackberry.com or www.vzam.net/blackberry

Not receiving text messages

You are running out of memory, just free up your memory. You can do this by doing some or all of the following:

  • Clear your log (hold alt and press lglg>then menu key>select "Clear Log">confirm)
  • Close programs you're not currently using (hold alt and back button) Some items will always be running like messages, phone, browser, home screen so on and so forth, leave those running
  • Uninstall themes and programs that you are not using anymore (Options>Advanced Options>Applications) [Leave the following applications on the phone or you will have trouble: BlackBerry "Version # i.e. 4.2" Core Applications; BlackBerry System Software; BlackBerry Attachment Service; Browser; Help; Phone. The rest are if you use them or not i.e. Tasks; MemoPad, BB Messenger, if you don't use them then you can delete them without major problems on your phone)
  • Move photos, music, video and other multimedia over to your disc instead on the actual BB device. Also delete ringtones that you no longer use
  • From your desktop uninstall languages that you do not need
  • Delete out your old text messages and emails, try to save them on your computer instead of your laptop (with email) or forward text messages that you need to your email then delete the actual text message
This should be a good start to clearing out your memory and start receiving text messages again along with your call logs showing up. If you remove an application it will ask to reboot, let it and then send a text message from online to make sure that you're up and working again. Then maintenance your BlackBerry about every week afterwards depending on your storing habits. Hope it works!

My phone and text messages

This issue is happening because the device memory is low. When the device's memory is low, the BlackBerry's Low Memory Manager kicks in and starts removing call logs and/or messages to clear space.

The link below shows some ways to free up memory on the BlackBerry device:
