did you clean all contacts? never use anything sharp in or closet to a camera. To clean contacts in a camera and on the batteries, just use a dry cloth and a cotton swab. My 20 year old camera's (same brand and a canon) still work as the first day I used them. they are always stored dry and without a battery, when I don't use the for a longer period.
Recheck the manual (yes most manuals from Nikon are still online) if you did setup the camera correct.
The Canon EOS Rebel G is an all-plastic 35mm SLR film camera there is no way this camera model can download pictures to a computer, it's a film camera. If you have miss printed the model correct the error and resubmit the question.
Set the shooting mode to a Creative Zone mode. Under the Settings tab select [Live View function settings] and press OK. Select [Live View Shoot] and press OK. Select Enable to use the LCD or Disable to use the viewfinder.
For full details, please see the "Live View Shooting" section in the manual.
That's because your camera does not have "live view". SLR's only started to get live view recently; it's more difficult for them to achieve it as they work completely differently to regular compact cameras.
With an SLR the whole point has always been to use the optical viewfinder instead of an LCD screen. The screen is just there to view camera settings, menus and to review shots already taken.

No, they are not the same at all. The F1 had a drop in screen in its own frame that you installed with the finder off the camera. The AE-1P used a single piece screen that installed from the front through the mirror area.
You will be pleased to hear there is nothing wrong with your camera, that's the way it is I'm afraid, there is no live preview on most dSLR's except the most recent, most expensive models..
It took me a while to get used to the idea after using compacts for a few years, but we were quite happy with the viewfinders on our film SLR's...
