Document Jam Error Message on Brother MFC-8660DN

I have an error message on my machine that says "Document Jam"
Clear the scanner jam, then press the Stop Key.
There is nothing jammed and I can feed a new sheet through it but when it comes out, it repeats the error message. I cannot get it to clear. I cannot use the fax or copy features without the document feeder. I can only print from my pc.

I have the same problem on Brother MFC-9840CDW (after only 700 copies, no telefax, no print outs). I have not found a solution til yet.

I have the same problem, cannot clear the document jam message. Tried everything, including turning it off and turning it back on. I can only receive faxes but I cannot send faxes or copy. Very frustrating!!!!

document jam message with no document jammed

  • Anonymous May 07, 2009

I fired up my system this morning and.....bang! I am now getting the same message everyone else has described. 'Document Jam, clear the scanner jam, then press the Stop key'. There is nothing jammed. I inspected the rollers, the paper feed- you name it, looking for even the smallest piece of paper that might be causing it, but no. I can receive faxes and print, but cannot send faxes or make copies.

was working fine, then suddenly stopped printing, giving no error message, there is no jammed paper inside, seems paper won't feed

I had the same problem with a Brother MFC-8460 and called Brother's support line. The solution that worked for me was to lift the top cover where the sheets of paper go through when you fax. On the right of the black rectangluar piece with grey roller there is a slot in the tray with a black lever inside. The black piece was stuck down inside the slot and had to be popped back out. Once it was out I hit the stop button and it was fixed!!

Read all of the solutions and still did not get it right. Called the Brother Tech in and here is the solution.
Opens the scanner lid.
3.5 cms (1 1/2 or 1.5 inches) to the right of the gray roller is a 2.5 cm x 3mm) (1.00 inch 3/16") slot.If there is not a black plastic tongue (1.3 x .5 cm) sticking out of the slot that is the problem. Free up with a paper clip. So that the tongue protrudes. Then push stop/exit button. All will be well.
There is no equivalent slot on the left side and compressed air will only fluke a recovery. The technician applied some grease after disassembly but I think a small spray of silicon may offer equal preventative value.

Had a different model of brother printer, but looked for a similar sort of lever. Pulled up one of the levers that looked suspect and it worked! Thank you so much!

"Clear Scanner jam" is the scrolling message: At the document feeder, from front view, there is a small piece of plastic on right side of the rollers (in a slot). It looks like spring is not doing it's job. If you push it with your finger, it will go down. Use a screw driver to pull it up, then blow out the dust; once that is done, it'll be OK. The spring has lots of clearance on all sides. I also suggest Cleaning the spring slot (this is not official at this time).

My 9840CDW had the same problem. It was a black plastic flipper beside the roller in the center under the top cover. There is one on each side of it. One was stuck down. Works perfect now.

Thank you, everyone. I was almost to the point of kicking the darn thing or reaching for a screw driver. It seems all of your suggestions worked. I lifted the cover, popped the spring and blew out some small dust bunnies and ta-da! It now works fine.

I'm looking for a debug solution. however, you can lift the feeder and then press the stop button and the machine will reset - at least mine will.

i can copy/scan/fax multiple pages at one session thru the feeder but every time when the job is done i get the document jammed message tw009 even tho nothing is jammed.

We fixed our problem. We used a can of that compressed air and gave the machine a good spray to blow out anything that might be causing the document jam error message. We thought it might be a tiny piece of paper stuck somewhere that we could not find. Anyhow, our problem seems to be gone.

I went through all the solutions given above but none on them worked. Each time I pressed the stop button, the Document Jam came back. I lifted the ADF cover, the black plastic flipper was already up. Not knowing what else to do :

- I pushed the plastic flipper in and holding it down, pressed the stop button and pronto the "Document Jam" went away. I tried scanning a document to see if it works and it did.

I then got a can of compressed air and blowed it at as many places as possible in the ADF. It seems to have worked !!

I had this problem with a Brother MFC-8460M. Opening the cover of the feeding unit on top of the printer and cleaning it with compressed air solved the problem. Most probably an insect stuck somewhere

Document jam brother mfc 8460n

you cannot clear this unless there is still a presence of paper inside the machine.

or you can open and close your machine once you are cleared of any paper jammed, be sure not to leave and removed all residual paper in the paper path, the tiny sensor would recognize any sort of this and thus make your machine unoperable.

Document, Jam???

Hey I figured it out. On the top where you insert paper into the automatic document feeder you will notice a small switch. When paper is set in the tray the switch is pressed down. I noticed on mine that the switch had become stuck down. I just used a small push-pin and popped it up. Error message went away.

Paper jam

try removing the back door where you are supposed to clear a paper jam from, and then replace it. If that does not work try leaving the printer unplugug for a few minutes. If this does not work, try printing a document with the printer, and see if it clears the error then.
