The "STRING" is referred to as a LINK. The link has a plastic connector glued to each end. It is common for the plastic to get brittle with age (even less than 5 years) or the nylon cord to wear down and break. That is why you see the frayed cord. You have to pull the dishwasher out to fix the problem. I had to order my link online because parts store in my city didn't have it in stock. Go to the Kitchenaid website to and key in your model number to get the parts schematic for your dishwasher. Under Customer Care, go to Locate Manuals and Guides, key in your model # and click Go. At the bottom of the web page you'll see Parts List. Click on the link and this pdf pops up: http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%208194009.pdf.) From the schematic you can find on page 7 "Link, Door Balance" which is #24 part 8535568. The spring hooks on to the back of the dishwasher frame and runs parallel to the floor. The Link end with the round hole attaches to the spring and the other end slips/hooks over the bracket arm that is attached to the door. Good Luck
Testimonial: "Thank you so much; that exactly describes what I did, (Because of an irregularity in the mounting, I hoped to fix w/o pulling it out.)"
Door string?
Hi,
I think you meant the spring and not string. This is normally the balance of door with which it is attached. Such cases you need to replace both when one will break. Some models you can reach it without drawing the dishwasher outside. In some cases you need to get dishwasher outside sufficiently in order to obtain to them, they are found beyond each side to the front. You can obtain them from the bellow mentioned link:

My Kitcheaid dishwasher KUDS01FLSS6 had a door string break, which I can see, as the frayed end is on the floor on the left side. I received the part, but am unsure how to replace. For example, do I first need to pull out the dishwasher, or do I start by taking apart the door? I hate to take apart for exploratory surgery, to find out that I did not need to do so
Hello, I need help on best way to begin replacing the frayed door spring KUDS01FLSS6, hoping to not make more work for myself.
No the STRING broke. I can see the frayed end under the left side of the KUDS01FLSS6.
Hmmm, on the KUDS01FLSS6, the door has a black pivot that sticks into the base and anchors to the string connected to the spring on the side of the dishwasher. The plastic anchor to this pivot broke on one side.
Don't see my response, but the STRING is what broke, or more specifically the plastic anchoring the string to the pivoting anchor on the door. by pulling the dishwasher out a bit I also see that the spring is not longer attached.
Clarification: the STRING broke, or more specifically, the plastic anchoring the string broke so I need to remount the replacement string (with plastic ends) to the door pivot and the spring to which it is anchored. Looks like I have to pull out the dishwasher to get to the spring anchor, as I can't see how it attaches.
The string that connects the spring to the door pivot.
