Okay, I'm having big, big issues with my laptop. It's an Inspiron with Vista on it. I turned on the computer one day and I got a black screen with white text saying "Windows failed to start." I only have two options, one is to launch startup repair, and the other is to start Windows normally. I tried to start it normally, but all I get is the green loading bar, then a black screen that stays blank like that. So then I tried the other option, and it says that it's searching for problems. I left it to do that all night one night, but the next morning, nothing had happened and it was still on that same screen. I then pressed the F8 key while my computer booted up, so I did. There I was given multiple options. The first was to repair my computer. I logged in as an admin and had the options to launch another startup repair, use system restore, windows complete restore, windows memory diagnostic tool, the command prompt, and Dell DataSafe Restore and Emergency Backup. I tried system restore but I kept getting error message 0x80070001. Then I went back to the F8 options. The next three options were three different types of Safe Mode. I tried them, but after all the files(?) load, it stays on that screen forever. Other options I had were to enable boot logging, enable low-resolution video, use the last known good configuration, use the directory services restore mode, use debugging mode, disable the automatic restart on system failure, disable the driver signature enforcement, and again, start windows normally.
I don't know what can help me or what I should do anymore. Help!
Did you try to "Restore this computer to another point in time"? Then you press F8, and choose "System Restore" then another screen asks if you want to go to safe desktop, or do a system restore, when you select system restore, another window, a bit like a calendar, and you choose a date prior to when you had problems?
Otherwise, please try this... when dell screen comes up on keyboard hit CTRL+ F11 twice only then you will see Dell pc restore by Symantec.Hit on restore and hit on i agree and select the option Restore the pc to dell factory settings and then it will restore the pc.
Otherwise you will have to obtain a Windows Vista install DVD, boot on this and repair/reinstall from That.. anyway try whats proposed and get back to me..

I tried what you said. System restore gave me an error message no matter which point I tried, pressing CTRL + F11 didn't bring up anything new, and I'm not entirely sure how to repair/reinstall Vista from here...but I do have the disk.
