Your camera has a small chance of recovering from this very common fault: it's usually just caused by debris or dirt on the mechanism but in this case it will be either due to dislodged or broken components. You can try some of the fixes listed in this link , fix #7 is the one you're really aiming at but it's an all or nothing repair. Many retractable lens cameras have fragile zoom assemblies, but in my experience the Optio S12 has a poorer design in this respect that most and seems particularly prone to the fault.

If your camera shows absolutely no external evidence of having been dropped, then you may instead wish to see if Pentax will repair or replace it under warranty or even as a goodwill repair if just outside the warranty as it's just possible that they have identified a fault in design, materials or manufacturing of the lens unit. It would be best to say that the fault occurred out of the blue. if you choose this option, DO NOT make any attempt to fix this yourself. You also need to be aware that if Pentax judge that the fault was due to abuse (being dropped) they will offer to fix the camera at cost or will return it to you for a small fee. Given that the whole lens assembly must be replaced, and that you can buy a new replacement for around £100, you might decide that a paid repair makes no economic sense.

I sincerely hope that you get your camera working again and that you found my reply to be of use in deciding which approach to take. If so, please rate my answer.

Pentax optio 12 software won't download windows 8

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Hi,

Is the lens totally stuck? Does it even move a little? Did you try to power cycle the camera?

When I switch it on it says lens error 0x0311 The camera is pentax. Optio E70L 10.1 megapixel

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Lens won't retract

You could try to gently pull the lens straight. If it's leaning to the right then pull the lens to the left. Don't use brute force but it's possible to realign the lens this way. If it works you'll hear a click and the lens will look straight. Switch on and see if it retracts. I'd only use this as a last resort because you can cause additional damage if it's overdone. It has sood success rate also

Pentax Optio M20

Maybe.
But it does seem to be a lens problem. Possibly the lens is out of sync as mentioned in another post here.If there is a grinding, the lens is probably damaged by dirt or sand.
Make sure the batteries or battery is fully charged.

It sounds as if the battery is very low on power. Try charging it up.

Optio s5i Lens Stuck Problem

You can try removing the battery and leaving out overnight then putting it back and charging it up then try the power. This has worked for some people but not all.
