Yes , it will work but make sure you get a remote with the capability to control a Citizen TV.

The codes are different for each universal remote for example:

TV Citizen 0060, 0039, 0280, 0030, 0056, 0046, 0092, 0186 may work for one brand of remote but not all. check online for a specific brand, see if it controls a citizen tv, then program in the codes as per the owner's manual and it should work.

Hell, depending on the brand and model of your universal remote, there are two procedures to program it to work with your citizen TV, first the direct code procedure(list of codes included in the owners manual) or the code scan procedure consisting of pressing certain keys on your remote untill the code that programs your citizen TV is obtained. And just so I understand your problem clearly, you have the remote for the TV, and no cable box is involved, but the TV itself wont let you into its on TV cable tv setup menus? Is it the case that you would like your TV to autotune your cable TV channels, because you cant access them? Even when you simply enter a number like 31 in?

(Because sometime TVs make you choose between an input source being Antenna or Cable, and if you choose Antenna, you are stuck with a limited amount of channels, even though the cable carries so many more.)

Regarding closed captioning, are you also looking to have the audio from programs written on the screen with the closed captioning system? Or did you mention these button to help me identify your set?

Also, even if I can't identify your exact set and provide a manual for you, I can recommend to you that in my experience, when a TV wont let me access cable channels and options, it is because somewhere in the setup I have selected Antenna as an input source. This is the only restrictive selection I can think of, given what I know of your problem so far.

I pressed some key on my remote accidently and thereon i have not been able to move to any other channel except adjusting the volume in this one...pls suggest...I do not know if this got locked..

Unfortunately, the codes you use with a universal remote are specific to that model of remote (it's not like all Citizen TVs are "0105" on every universal remote everywhere for example; the same TV might have a different code on each different model of remote), so we won't be able to give you a specific code to try.

However, you can try doing a "code search". Most models of universal remote allow you to search for the code. It's usually something like entering a special code (like 9998 or 0000) and then repeatedly pressing a button until your TV turns off or changes channel -- when it does, you know you've hit the right code and can stop. Look for instructions on how to do the code search in the manual for your remote.
