The best way is to format the card after you've downloaded all the pictures (and made sure they are on the computer (and preferably at least one backup device)). The format should be performed in the camera, not by the computer.

As you didn't specify the make and model of your camera, I can't tell you exactly how to do this, but it will be somewhere in the menu system. Some cameras also have a shortcut, usually involving holding down two buttons simultaneously.

  • Remove your memory card from your digital camera
  • Place your memory card inside of your memory card reader. Be careful not to push it to hard in. It should slide in easily.
  • Connect the USB connector from the memory card into the USB port on your computer.
  • Choose the drive that your memory card reader is on. It may say the name of your camera such as KODAK for example. Click on that drive.
  • Select all of the pictures on your card by pushing the "cntrl" and "a" button your computer. Right click, and then choose "cut.

Use a card reader plugged into a USB port.  The computer will see it as another drive (or maybe more than that depending on how many types of card it will read) and you can then navigate to the picture files and delete the ones you don't want.
In camera, you select replay (right-pointing triangle) and you should get the option to delete each one.

Please be noted that your phone memory should show as a drive letter in your explorer, if not, you need to take out your memory card and connect using a card reader, or plug-in to card reader slot if there's any on your computer.

Retrieve deleted photos from memory card

If you are using a memory card, take no more pics until you've recovered the photos, take the card out of the camera. This is to reduce the chance of you overwriting some of your "lost" photos. There are many good freeware photo recovery software options that are available to help you recover your photos. This blog article reviews and outlines several of the better ones.
