the same exact thing happen to me......then I purchased a new connector (I used the old usb so much with the ipod)...and bingo itunes recognized the iphone......

good chance that your phone is not a true iphone. I have come across a lot of really really good "clones" out there. I recently bought a "iphone" for $60 cnd dollars and when i plugged it into my laptop nothing happened. Look on your phone for a app that is called u-disk that is a program that will link your phone to your computer and with that you can transfer music and other data to your phone via the usb cable.

The clones from china are almost as good as the real thing but they dont allow you to access the itunes store and i have had the hardest time trying to find any apps that i can load on to the china clone iphone.
