UHF Antenna for Motorola HT1000 MTS2000 MTX8000 095A
I tested it last weekend in Vermont, 1.72 miles, 60 feet elevation differential, through woods. First unit inside a wood frame dweling. Second unit was inside a steel frame building, wood sheathed. Communications was faultlessly clear.
Dave,
Yes, you can get a longer antenna for your TalkAbout Distance DPS. The standard NAE6583 antenna to the SP10 radio will work on the TalkAbout Distance model. It would possibly give you a little more range, however, antennas are designed to be the "length of the duct of the wave" of the MHz you are transmitting. So the antennas which come on a particular radio model are usually the most efficient. Your radio will operate well with either antenna.
Range is determined by height and placement of the antenna. Simply holding the radio perpendicular will make a significant difference. People who tip their radio to the side, as if to talk on a phone, can reduce the range of the radio by up to 2/3s. Even the body fluid of the person wearing the radio can absorb part of the range. To increase range, hold the radio upright, wear it high on your body, and face the direction you are wanting to transmit. Out-of-doors around rocks, dirt and trees you should expect approx. 2 mi. line-of-sight. Obstacles will reduce this range, as will trying to talk from inside a building to outside.
Your radio has 3 channels labeled with alphabet letters ABC. These channels will operate on a higher wattage than your other channels. This may also assist you.
Your TalkAbout Distance DPS is a good radio, and is even capable of the newer narrowband channel spacing. This is a fully repairable radio. In the repair shop the only issue we face is the battery trays are no longer available. So with this in mind, take good care of your trays. (Both AA and NiCd trays.)
