This may or may not help--try taking the battery out and reinstalling it again. If that doesn't work, there's a chance that your battery needs replaced or the adapter input jack may have a loose connection at the motherboard (usually if moving the cord around at the computer jack input changes your power state, then that is the problem). Typically, aftermarket univeral adapters are cheaper than new batteries; however, it's been my experience that they are rarely the problem. Good luck.

Can not obtain schematics/drawings of motherboard

SATA is standard so if you purchased an Sata Power Cable from anywhere it should work. One end will only fit into the back of the hard drive and the other end will only fit into the slot on the motherboard.

My gateway M-7031U stops charging at 30%

Unfortunately your battery is probably shot. First though, try to run the battery down until the laptop dies. Now with the discharged battery, and the laptop powered off, plug it in and leave it off for a few hours. Power the laptop back on and check the charge level. Still at 30%? Then the battery is very likely just bad. Unfortunately, the cells in the battery just simply die for a number of reasons, and capacity is lost. This is why most manufactures will only warranty a battery for 1 year.

Take the battery out and write down the model number and the "MAh" or "Ah" number. The MAh number represents the capacity of the battery. The higher this number, the generally longer the laptop runs on battery. Go to http://gateway.shopbysystem.com/gateway-m-7301u-notebook-accessories.html and verify that this is your laptop model. This is a Gateway authorized reseller. Looks like they want $90 for a small battery. Take your battery model number and go to Amazon and look up the battery there. Make sure it's MAh number matches or exceeds what is on your battery. Usually you can get a replacement battery from Amazon for about $20 less than Gateway.

Laptop motherboard is fried

I have not heard of known issues. My suggestion is, if you are sure the MB has gone bad, is to look on E-bay to find a replacement. The price will be way better than going to the manufacturer.
