Does the firewire require a special input on the computer?
Does every computer come with the input for the firewire required for transferring movies from the DCR-TRV310 to the computer, or is it a special input that has to be ordered on the computer? I have a firewire that fits into the camera, but don't see anything on my computer for the other end. I just have USB inputs on my computer. Thanks!

The PC does need a Firewire interface and yours may not have it... since you don't see it. I didn't have one either so I hopped on eBay and searched for a firewire card. Found one, ordered it, installed it and now I have a firewire interface the camera can plug into.

This requires a i.LINK socket on the PC, is also known as Firewire or IEEE 1394; if your PC doesn't have one of these inputs, adaptors and add-on cards are widely available). This page from sony shows how
Copying from TAPE to PC requires 4 things. The video cam where the TAPE will be played, a FIREWIRE compatible cable, a FIREWIRE card installed on your computer and a SOFTWARE that supports a firewire device that would record the video.
Unlike Digital Videos that you can just copy and paste the video file from the video cam to the computer, the tape to pc transfer is more of recording the video in from the video cam by playing it in real time while the computer is recording it.
This is a sample of a FIREWIRE card that is installed inside a computer. An external USB version of this is also available.
This is a sample of a FIREWIRE cable.
Windows MOVIE MAKER is an example of a software that can be used to record the videos. It supports FIREWIRE devices.
USB will transfer your still photos to a PC.
If you wish to copy movie files you will require a firewire cable and ports.
Usually a 4 to 6 pin firewire cable depending on the computer. eg laptop verses Desktop/Mac.
If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camera to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:
(Applicable for Windows XP Operating System only):
As you are using a Windows XP Operating System then you have to install
the USB Streaming Driver in the Computer from the supplied Software
disk with the Computer.
Check this Link for the instruction to transfer video to a Computer using USB Streaming.
As you do not have the supplied Software disk then I suggest that you use the i.LINK cable to transfer the video. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port.
An i.LINK is a black D shaped connector with 4 or 6 pins. The i.LINK cable is an optional accessory for the Camcorder. You require to purchase either a 4 - pin to 4 - pin or a 4 - pin to 6 - pin i.LINK / Firewire cable depending on the number of pins on the i.LINK / Firewire port of your Computer (since Camcorder will have only 4PIN i-LINK, while the Computer may have a 4PIN or 6 PIN i.LINK port).
You do not require any Drivers or Software from Sony to transfer the
video from the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK/Firewire
interface.
You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer.
If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:
(Applicable for Vista Operating System Only.)
This Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the VISTA Operating System.Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port.

The USB drive for Sony CAM you can download from Sony web but the USB will not allow you to transfer video from your CAM only for memory stick
However if you have firewire input on your Laptop, have you? normaly if you have firewire input on your laptop as soon as you connect your CAM it will detect automatic either with windown movies maker or with Nero
Sometime the firewire from CAM defect I repaired a few of them with this problem
Can you conect this CAM to another computer or try different cable ?
Or tell me exactly what input you have on your laptop such firewire input, PCMCIA slot
Cheers
