Boot Manager is missing If the boot partition no longer can be found, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information
More Info MS KB 919529 More Info MS KB 927391 Check points for fixing missing boot-manager: Check that your boot device is configured properly Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". Boot Manager is compressed If by accident having compressed the entire boot partition, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart OR maybe try this first. Check points for fixing compressed boot-manager: Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". If the above doesn't solve the problem then boot into WinRE again, but when selecting the Vista-installation, then press "Load Drivers" (Instead of "Next") and use the mini Windows Explorer to right-click the boot-drive and deselect "Compress this Drive" and choose Apply to sub-folders and files. If that also fails then boot into WinRE again, and go to the "Command Prompt" and execute these commands: compact /U C:\bootmgr compact /U C:\ntldr If you for some strange reason have lost your Vista DVD, then you can also use a Windows 2000 / XP install CD and enter the recovery console instead and execute the following commands: attrib -c c:\bootmgr attrib -c c:\ntldr

Try start up in Safe Mode press F8. Choose Safe Mode, when at the choice window, to select either Safe Mode Desktop, OR System Restore, chooses system restore and choose a time before you had the "Problem" and follow instructions. This should get you back.

SOURCE: BOOTMGR is missing

DO NOT ACT until these details are confirmed. I have worked on many dual boot machines in my day -- however I never deleted the boot partition of a dual boot machine. What is the ultimate goal for this machine a single boot windows 2003 server or something else?

Dual boot machines are tricky as Vista was the first operating system on the machine I believe the option to boot the windows 2003 server partition was added to the boot.ini file in the Vista Partition -- assuming Vista maintains that tradition from Windows NT. If you want I could research the reconstruction of boot blocks, etc.

The repair would probably involve at a minimum using a partitioning program on bootable media to flag the Windows 2003 partition as the boot partition. What is required beyond that will require research.

Another option could be to install a third party boot controller such as System Commander which recognised operating systems in existing partitions and enabled them as a boot choices. That might be most viable only if you are considering adding another operating system to the machine to allow system commander to be installed. (similarly the boot.ini entry could be added after installation of a windows nt based operating system too)

A DOS boot disk with system commander on it may allow access to the Windows 2003 system as a work around but who has dos around anymore with an appropriate version of system commander for dos that would recognise windows 2003?

I'm assuming that you are running vista. Try one of the following:
You will require a Vista DVD to boot off of.

Proceed to the System Repair Option, and follow the steps. It should repair your boot sectors..

Or

Once you have booted up, Press SHIFT+F10 to run 'cmd' prompt.

Then at the command prompt type the following (hitting <enter>) after each line.:

attrib bootmgr -s -r -h
del bootmgr
ren temp bootmgr
attrib bootmgr -a +s +r +h

http://cyberst0rm.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-to-fix-bootmgr-is-missing-in.html

I assume you are running vista because bootmgr.exe is used to run vista from startup. "bootmgr" is short for boot manager, and without this, your computer simply doesnt know how to start vista from your hard drive.

To fix it is quite simple. First of all go into your BIOS menu (usually press F2 or DEL when prompted when you turn on your pc). Make sure your cd/dvd drive is set to be your primary boot device. This way you can run your setup disk in the next step.

Insert your Vista install disk and restart your system. Press any key when prompted to begin running the dvd. Wait for it to give you a list of choices. This may take a while as it often stays a blank screen for some time. Choose "repair", and the setup will auto detect your operating system. It will also fix your bootmgr.exe at this point. If it does not, you can go on to the next screen and choose "startup repair".

Use your recovery disc, that should have been included with the laptop. Boot with it in the drive, or you may have to access the BIOS to boot from the drive first. Follow the instructions. Hope that helps you.
