Many RCA/GE sets had troubles with solder connections around the tuner section of the circuit board. These would cause many different symptoms including your fuzzy picture. You can test if your set has this by giving it a whack. This will vibrate those bad connections and affect what you see.

If you or someone you know is comfortable doing electronic soldering, you can try repairing this yourself. Instructions are widely available on the Web (this was a very common problem). Here is one link.

If you're not up to this repair, a TV service shop should definitely know what to do. It may not be worth paying for a repair, though. Labor may cost $50 or more, and sooner or later you'll be replacing this set anyway when the picture tube goes bad. Maybe it's time to put the money toward a new set.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using Fixya!

Picture fades to black

Find the vertical IC and check for very small cracks on the solder joints of its pins and resolder (approx. 10 Pins). Also check in the same area for a 1 micro farad at 50 vdc capacitor that goes bad and replace it.

Flickers after 5min of use. Perfect sound, turns on fine and excellent picture quality when in blue screen menu mode. Why?

This intermittent problem is very difficult to rectify. Just contact the authorised service center for Hitachi at your town. The work is really a skilled one, that a user cannot do it with ease.

Horizontal lines and no picture or sound after approx. 5 minutes

Good day!!!!

That problem is usually cause of faulty capacitors on the power supply board..

Just follow this instruction to fix your TV..

1. Open the back cover of your TV.
2. Look at the power supply board..Its normally connected to the power cord..
3. After that,,try to look at the actual image of capacitors if it is bulged on the top so that you can easily determine the bad capacitors..
4. After that,,try to replaced the bad capacitors using soldering iron and soldering lead..replaced the capacitors only with the same type ratings and value..
5. Some of the capacitors not bulged so its better if have a capacitance meter

I have a GE TV model: 27GT271 and no sound

Possible cause of the problrm is bad/poor solder on the grounds for the tuner circuit shield an the bottom (solder side) of the circuit board. Grounds need a wire jumper from point to point. This was a common problem for those sets and ocassionally it would take out the eeprom chip with it. (Various other problems were shrinking picture/fuzzy picture and intermitt. power)

I have picture and no sound

Try unplugging it for a minute. You will have to go through setup again (most likely).
Some of these sets have a (software?) issue and the audio drops out maybe once or twice a year-at least that's what I've experienced. No real fix for it.

Black screen and no sound

I realized that there is a 90 day warrantee on parts and a 30 day limited warrantee on labor for the  repairs that were done. As I stated, the original problem was the picture shrinking after a few minutes of the set being on. The repair firm took my control board with them. When they came back to install the repaired control board in my set there was a load spark during the installation, after which I had a black screen and no sound.  The repair firm took my set them and installed a "CAP Kit", a STRM6511, and a "D1881". The set worked perfectly until two days ago.
I called the repair firm an they are coming out this Thursday to check out my TV.   I am hoping the problem is related to the failure of one of the parts installed to fix a similar problem which occurred after the sparking incident.

TV picture

The set you have has a bad tuner assembly. At this point most likely you would be better off getting a new TV set. Good Luck
