I am 100% sure that this is the laser your ps3 has two different lasers one is red for regular movies videos or music and one blue for games and bluray movies try to play a blueray movie and if it don't play or plays for few minutes and then freez is more likely your laser it can be replace just look for you ps3 model and buy one for your ps3 model not all ps3's use the same laser there is like 3 diferent lasers
Have you tryed to play a BlueRay movie? PS3 games are stored on BlueRay so it might play DVD's and CD's, but the BlueRay's laser diode could be burning out.
YOur PS3 might be overheating, make sure that it is somehwere in the open, like on a desk, or at least has room if its in a cabinet. Also make sure that it is not on a rug, or any other heat conducting amterial such as a bed, rug, or even plastic.
you can try and do a system restore which will reset everything like the first day your turned it on just
go to -- system settings/system restore/format hardrive-- also be sure you backup your filessystem restore eg. your game saves.
If that doesn't work you'll have to call sony and send it in for repairs 1-800-345-SONY to receive repair/replacement they will send you a box to send your ps3 in. Its free if your still under warrenty but since your ps3 is playing ps2 games most likely your warrenty is gone. So it will cost you 150 bucks.
I hope the system repair works for you, it has for a few people.
Open up the PS3 and then open up the Blu-Ray Drive. Then clean the lens with rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip. I heard that lighter fluid on a q-tip works way better than rubbing alcohol and isopropyl alcohol, so try using it on a q-tip to clean the lens. I'm not responsible for any damages to your console.
