It depends on the exposure mode.

In Program mode (P), turn the command dial and the camera will shift the exposure by changing both the aperture and the shutter speed.

In Aperture-priority mode (A), turn the command dial and the camera will adjust the shutter speed to suit.

In Manual mode (M), hold the aperture button and turn the command dial.

If you're using a lens with an aperture ring, turn it to its smallest aperture (largest f/number) and lock it.

Are you saying the aperture doesn't change when you turn the command dial in A or P mode? If you're trying to set an aperture the lens is not capable of, you can't do that.

I recognize the problem you are having. I purchased a special book in order to find out how to do it. Check out his website! http://mansurovs.com/how-to-change-aperture-on-nikon-d3000-and-d5000

Message to lock f at highest with d5000

That depends on what "this" lens is.

In all cases, turn the aperture ring to its smallest setting (largest f/number). If there's a red or orange slide near the aperture ring, that's the lock. Slide it to keep the aperture ring from turning. If there is no slide then don't worry about it.

You should now be able to set the aperture from the camera body, the same way as on a lens without an aperture ring.

How to manually adjust the aperture in video mode on the Nikon D90

When working with a AF-D type lens mounted on the D90, you can manually adjust the aperture during video production. In order to do this, lock the aperture at f/22. Turn on live view. Once in Live-View mode, you may unlock the aperture and adjust it during video-taking. You may NOT take a still image when doing this. This feature creates very pleasing videos with out-of-focus backgrounds, and is a very useful tool.

After dropping my nikon d5000 camera the lense doesn't seem to fit

If you drop one, the main components that can get damaged are the lens elements, the focusing ring, the aperture ring, the lens mount and the filter mount. Some of these components are much easier to fix than others.

I just purchased a new 650 -1300 lens for my nikon d5000, i know you use it in manual mode but I cant get any aperture readings on the camera, any ideas ? i can set the shutter speed ok but the camera...

The lens lacks the electronics to communicate with the camera. As you said, you must use the lens in manual mode. You control the aperture by turning the aperture ring on the lens. You can read the current aperture setting by looking at the lens, but you will not see the setting in the viewfinder. You also will not get any metering assistance from the camera. You can review the pictures (and the histogram) to fine-tune your exposure.

I just bought a nikon d5000 and when i turn the settings to manual all of my photos are black. Do i need to change something else or could there be something wrong with my camera?

When you set the exposure mode to Manual, you then have to set the shutter speed and aperture yourself. That's the whole point of the manual setting: the camera does none of the work for you.

Currently I have a Nikon F65 non-digital camera with 28-80mm lense. I am planning to buy a Nikon D5000 DSLR. My Question: If i buy a Body on D5000 and will be able to use my f65 lenses? Will there will any...

If anything, you will gain image quality because the sensor on the D5000 is smaller than a frame of 35mm film. Thus you will only be using the central portion of the lens. On the D5000, the 28-80mm lens will act as a 42-120mm would on the F65.

However, you will lose autofocus capability. The D5000 does not have a focus motor in the body, relying on the lens having the motor, and neither version of the 28-80mm lens has a focus motor. The lowest-end Nikon dSLR with a focus motor is the D90.
