If the line travels from the top of the screen to the bottom, try disconnecting the Tcon LVDS lead. The Tcon is located in the top middle of the LCD rear. Disconnect the LVDS from the Tcon by pushing in the outer lobes. Clean the contacts on the LVDs lead and reinsert. If this doesnt cure the fault, disconnect the ribbons from the Tcon connecting the LCD and clean and reinsert. If this doesnt cure the fault you have a faulty LCD.
If the vertical line doesnt travel from top to bottom of the LCD, the LCD is faulty (LCD matrix buffer).Hope this helps :)

Sorry to tell you, it is not a scratch, but a bad cable connection from the driver IC's, connecting up the plasma screen to the drive board, or the drive IC for that section of the screen is defective. It is not a repair a user can do as there are no user replaceable parts inside this set. Your going to have to call NEC or an experienced Plasma repair shop.

snoopmikeym - Have you found anything out on what is causing the line?? I am completely frustrated with Hitachi no tech help what so ever. The nearest service place is in a town of about 500 people and 30 miles away... I doubt they've worked on a 55" plasma before....
SOURCE: green vertical line on the right side of screen
I bumped my screen by accident recently and now have a similar problem (multiple vertical and horizontal thin lines). I was told that the screen is now bad and probably cannot be repaired. The cost of replacement is more than the cost of a new set. Sorry, but that may not be the answer that you are looking for.
SOURCE: Permanent Vertical Line on my Sony Bravia 46 inch LCD TV
I had one vertical line it cam and went for awhile then stayed permanently and I took it in for repair only to be told they couldn't fix it now they are trying to give me a used tv (warranty don't want to pay) but I refuse I purchased it new and I told them I want a new one. I had that tv less than 2 years. So if you have a warranty and lines get it in fast.
