USB Flash drive not being detected is a common problem, its sometimes due to software or hardware issues. Check out this blog for help:
http://www.flashdrivepros.com/_blog/USB_Flash_Drive_Data_Recovery_Blog/post/Help!_Windows_No_Longer_Recognizes_My_Flash_Drive!/
If not, these guys do flash drive data recovery as well.
Since the system CAN detect it, the problem must be in the explorer - this can be solved by fixing the Drive Letter assigned to the usb drive.
Go to control panel.
Click Administrative Tools (View by "Large Icons")
Click Computer Management
Click the Storage
Click the Disk Management
You must see at the right panel ALL the drives detected by the system (including the drive "unseen" by the explorer)
Right click the "unseen" usb drive, then choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths"
A new window will appear, (if the box is empty)
Click "Add". (you can now choose the letter you want for the usb drive).
Click "OK", then another "OK" to close the windows.
Open the explorer "Computer", the usb drive should now be visible.
