Wireless card not functioning/disabled after loading XP in a Compaq Presario C700T CTO Notebook PC

I have problems in installing the wireless card in my new notebook... it seems that after downgrading the OS from Vista to XP-Pro the wireless card has not been recognized...

the model details:

Compaq Presario C700T CTO Notebook PC ...

PLEASE help me by supplying the info on the model of the WIRELESS adapter/card and the compatible DRIVER for this particular notebook...

I have DOWNGRADED to XP-pro system (the original OS was Vista Home)...

The problem is that I don't see any 'wireless' adapter in :device manager>network adapter... the only device I see there is a "Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC"... I tried with different BroadCom and Intel PRO drivers... without any luck so far... in some cases when I installed some WLAN drivers the system is recognizing a new SM Bus Controller!

The OS originally (preloaded) was Vista Hole Basic... and currently I have removed that and installed XP-Pro SP2... the wireless was working fine in the Vista... but now after Xp installation it is inactive...

The notebook has a wireless on/off button. when it is on it shows blue light, when off shows amber/orange light. After I installed XP, I tried to turn the switch ON, but it is not turning on (remained in amber/orange state)... originally in Vista... I was able to turn it on or off by pressing the button...

Now, in XP, when I press the button I get a message in HP wireless assistant that the Adapter is Disabled!

Here is the output from HWIDS:

We have purchased a Compaq Presario C755TU Notebook and having same problem. Infact I've not got any driver neither for vista nor for win xp with this laptop.
After purchase I sent mail to hp support regarding drivers for this note book. Here are there reply.

From your email, we understand that you are looking for the drivers of windows XP Operating System for your Notebook PC.

In this regard I need to share with you that the notebook has
been tested with Windows Vista Operating System. It has not been tested
with Windows XP operating system and hence it might not be compatible
with it. HP recommends Windows Vista Operating System with the
notebook. Therefore, it is requested to install Windows Vista with the
notebook as it has been tested with it.

We would be able to provide the drivers for Windows XP Operating System
if it will be available on HP website. Otherwise I would request you to
    take the help from Microsoft.

However, I am providing you base model drivers for your notebook model
on the "best effort" basis. It may or may not work. Please visit below
mentioned web link in order to download drivers for Windows XP
    operating system.

    1. Audio driver

You need to first install Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver from the below web link:

After that install Conexant High Definition Audio Driver:

    2. Modem driver

    3. Ethernet driver

    4. Display driver

    5. Wireless LAN Driver

    6. Touchpad driver

    7. Quick Launch Buttons

[NOTE: In case the web link does not open up, kindly copy and paste it
into the address bar of the web browser on your system and click on GO.]

If you need any further assistance with the same from my side please
feel free to get back to me, I shall be more than happy to assist you

Thank you and have a wonderful day.

Everything is working fine except wi-fi.

I'm still searching a solution for wifi driver for Compaq Presario C755TU Notebook.

The wireless is not going to turn on and off via the switch properly until we get the drivers loaded to make it work. There are 3 possible types of wireless card it could be, so we have to find out the exact model number of your system. On the bottom there should be a label that has a P/N or part number listed. what are those numbers. Here's an example of the label:

we need the info listed for #1, #2 and #3. Then we should be able to determine which adapter you have, and then we can (hopefully) find some Windows XP drivers for you.

I'm sorry to say that did not help to identify which card is installed in the system. Make sure the laptop is powered off and closed. Flip it over, and you'll see several covers that you can remove. Behind one of them is the wireless card - it will have at least one, and probably 2 wires connected to it. Read the model number and post that. It will be an Intel PRO/Wireless card, or an Atheros AR5007, or a Broadcom Wireless card. Once we know which one, we can then probably find the correct driver for it.

Assuming it is the Atheros chip as Derek believes, this should be the driver:

I have just been through this nightmare on a new C700t. The only wireless driver that would work for me was for the Atheros AR5006x chip and downloaded from a site in Czechoslavakia!
I used the Version which works just fine except that the blue/amber LEDs don't toggle as you turn the WiFi on and off. I guess I can live with that... (I read somewhere that this feature is a vendor supplied mod to the driver).

FYI- For any of you downgraging a Compaq Presario C700T CTO to Windows XP, this solved my audio driver problem. I can now control the volume settings and my headphones work correctly as well.

Conexant SmartAudio 221:

Use this for audio.Unzip to a folder.Run installer.if it errors use device Manager
From Device Manager, right click "Audio Device on HD",choose Update driver,
No to connect,
Install from a list or specific location,
Don't search I will choose the driver to install,
In the list of common hardware types, scroll down and select Sound, Video, and Game controllers.
Remove the check from "Show Compatible Hardware" and click on "Have Disk".
Next...browse to the unzipped folder and choose the "WiSVHe5.inf".Ignore XP when it complains.

To install audio / modem drivers, first download and install Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio (sp32646):

Conexant CX20549-12 Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows XP (sp36090.exe) (UAA Driver needed)

This will create a swsetup folder in C drive ("C:\sp36090")

Installing this driver may result in an error. But continue with the following steps to get the audio driver installed correctly.

1. Click on Start and select Run. Now type devmgmt.msc and press enter.

2. Right click on "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus" and click Update driver.

3. Select "Install from a list or specific location"

4. Click Next. Then select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install"

5. Click Next and then select "Sound, video and game controller" from the list.

6. Click Next and then click Have Disk.

7. Click Browse C:\sp36090 folder and select the .inf file (CpV30D5a) and click open and Continue with the onscreen instructions.

Conexant CX20548 Modem Driver for Microsoft Windows XP (sp36089.exe) (UAA Driver needed)

Download and install Conexant modem driver (sp36089). This will give error message and also will create a folder C:\swsetup\sp36089 which contains extracted driver files.

The same method which is used for installing audio driver needs to be followed for modem.
