There are many models. With no model number it is impossible for anyone to answer. Not all the models have an hour chime or function beep other than the alarm sound.
Being able to tap it and bring it back is a sure sign that there is a contact problem most likely in the circuit board. This is the worst case scenario. I would try going to a watch maker/technician to see of having the watch AC'd or reset fixes the problem. If not then I would have them look at the circuit board/movement. This may have been damaged during battery placement from too much pressure.
