Kenmore 62622 Microwave Oven Logo

I have the Kenmoore Microwave Hood 721.80402. During this last wave of storms, I was without power for 2 days. Once the power was restored, the microwave will not work. Everything is plugged in and the circuit breakers are all on. Any suggestions?

You might try pulling the plug on the unit and leaving it overnight. The electronics may have locked up due to irregular voltage during the failure. There may also be a GFI (ground fault interrupter) on that circuit that has tripped for the same reason. Check the kitchen outlets for a tripped GFI.

Having the unit sitting on the counter would make this easier but you will have to remove the housing to proceed.

If you are lucky, a main fuse (inside) has blown quickly enough to protect the low voltage circuitry but this is not generally the case.
Much of the circuitry involving the magnetron is by nature, more able to withstand a high-voltage transient coming in on the AC line but the control circuitry cannot.
There is normally a few cheap components that will protect the unit from low-energy spikes but lightning isn't in that category and I think the digital section (display & controls) has been damaged and the way they are assembled doesn't lend itself to repair at all.

This would mean that the electronics (normally a single board) would have to be replaced and despite the value of the board and its components, the cost (probably over $100 US) will cause you to weigh replacement of the unit.

If you own your home, I highly recommend the installation of a whole-house surge protector.
If you are capable of installing electrical devices (must be near the breaker box), the cost will be under $200 US and a competent electrician can install these for $50-$75 US in ~ 1 hr. IF you have two open (unused) breaker positions in the existing box since they require adding these.
They will provide protection of AC lines, phone lines and cable/satellite TV lines.

The company whose unit I bought offers $10,000 insurance included with the price and for 5 years; meaning, they will pay for replacement of devices damaged despite the correct installation of their product.

No power to the microwave, after storm.

The low voltage brownout let the oven draw too much current, and likely an internal fuse failed. Typically after removing a dozen Philips screws you can take off the cover and locate the fuse, which you can match and replace. [If it still has "power" (like the lights come on) but has stopped heating, then it could be any number of other issues (main capacitor fail, etc)] I've changed a fuse or two in my day, and years ago a failed capacitor, with success.

Lost power due the storm' when power was restored micro. never came back on

Possible that during the power outage there was fault in the mains supply and with the oven being plugged on it is possible that the power supply or the main board is damaged.
Unless you are able the top cover it is difficult to confirm if this can be silly fault like a fuse blown which is on the mains circuit or a Step down transformer or the processor board.

We had a bad power surge during a storm last week which fried my Panasonic NN-T990saf. My question is it worth trying to get it repaired or should I just buy a new micro wave?

Although lightning damage is normally fatal to anything with electronics inside, you might remove the back panel and look for fuse holders. If you find one (minimum) or two (likely), replace them (if you have a cheap multimeter you can check for continuity) and see  if it will turn on. You may have to do a little telephone work to locate the high current fuse which is probably 30 amps.
If you live in an area of frequent lightning strikes, investing in a 'whole house' surge arrester makes sense. These are installed in the main breaker box and any brand I've seen comes with a $10-25,000 insurance policy to replace any dead appliances that fail despite the surge protector. They cost $150-250 US plus installation which you can save if you are afraid to DIY.

No power...

If the stove was on without the hood fan's being on, it could have put too much heat in the "innards" of the microwave. It may have opened the thermostat or thermal fuse located inside - either on the chassis of the microwave or or the magnetron. It will look something like the one in the attached photo. For helpful exploded view diagrams and to order any needed parts, you can visit the GE parts Web site or the Sears parts Web site at http://www.geappliances.com/shop/prts/ or http://www3.sears.com/ (the 3 is correct) In my profile, you can find a link to my site, where you can find critical safety & disassembly tips.
