Old 80 gb playstation 3 turns off on it's own. My brother was playing LBP and suddenly it just turned off. I' pushed the power button to turn it back on and it turns itself off repeatedly.I tried turning off the master switch behind the ps3 for a few minutes and turn it back on. The red stand by light turns on and turn the PS3 back on. Again it immediately turns itself back off to stand by mode.
This can can be any one of numerous issues. The first step toward setting everything to rights is to discover what the light is trying to communicate, outside of the obvious fact that your system is not working. First, disconnect everything from the unit, power cable, HDMI, component cables, controller-charging cables or anything else you may have connected.
Allow the unit to sit and cool off for a few minutes before re-attaching all the component wires. It is a good idea to begin with just the connection to the television. You can also try a manual reset of the system if the above steps do not work, simply press and hold the power button for ten seconds.
If none of the above works, you are dealing with a serious PS3 flashing red light issue. This could be a faulty power supply, dead hard drive or malfunctioning CPU just to name a few. You will need to check all these components out and determine if they are still functioning correctly. Screwdrivers and a few other common household tools may be required.

Thanks. I had a feeling that is the problem. Now I have a new problem. Now that the ps3 is virtually dead, how can I transfer my saved data from a dead fat ps3 to the new slim ps3? I know swapping the hard drives won't work cause 1 it will have to be formatted first and 2 the hard drive shape is different.
