The volume control shaft lube, over time and heat exposure, will flow down and corrupt the contact between the volume twister and the spring loaded sensor. Pull the cover off the tuner, locate the volume control and take out the two screws holding it in. It looks like a small circuit board with the volume twister attached.
The base of the twister is hooked to the circuit panel by four metal tabs. Pry these guys gently away and pull the twister free. There will be a metal disk at the end of the volume control shaft, and will have a goopy lube residue on the face of it that can be cleaned with electric contact cleaner or some other kind of solvent. Wipe it clean,(do not immerse) reattach, and test. Worked perfect for me.

I am having this trouble with my 509S. I tried to follow your instructions, but cannot get the cover off. I've removed the screws on the sides, and under the front. Am I also supposed to remove all of the tiny ones in back, too? Please help, this is not my area of expertise! Thank you~

Encoder board part # AWX7386 is no longer available to purchase. You can do one of the two things below.
1- purchase the Encoder knob part # ASX7004 from Pioneerelectronics.com, but you need to be able to desolder the encoder knob from the board assembly and the install the new one.
2- This is an easier option to do first. Disconnect the power on your receiver. Open up the top cover only on your receiver model VSX-D409. Remove and pull out the black plastic knob (volume control) located on the front of your receiver. Look behind the volume control and you see a small board with part # AWX7386. Open up the two screws on the board and gently pull out the board. You see a volume contron knob installed on the board. Gently use a small flat head screw driver and push away the 4 fingers that are holding the top cover on the encoder in place. Then gently pull out the knob wich seperates the knob assembly. The use Electronics contact cleaner (Can be purchased from Radio Shack). Spray and gently clean inside of the volume controller (also known as Encoder). Be very carefull not to bend the small fingers located inside the unit. Sometimes there are some gowee stuff inside that is hard to clean so you need to use the cleaner and spray few time. When dry, install the volume control back and push the small 4 fingers in place. Install the boad back, replace the top cover on the unit and plug the unit back in. Test it, and you will be very happy. Enjoy..........

I have the same problem with my 509S. Bought it in May of 2000. Has worked fine until the volume problem started to occur in 2007. Don't know the causes. Remote works fine. Decided to upgrade and sell the 509S since it was aging. Just upgraded to the new VSX1018.
I am having this same problem with my 509S, and have tried to follow the instructions above, but can't figure out how to get the cover off! I've removed all screws, and it doesn't budge. Any thoughts?

Same problem but now the volume moves up and down randomly when playing basy music. Only the remote works as if the volume switch is touch it potentially goes full blast. Takin git to a repair shop to see if the unit is worth fixing and if not I shall dump it and buy a new one.
