Re: DVD drive Read problem in my Dell Dimension 3000
Make sure you have any and all Windows 7 updates from Microsoft, along with any updates for your DVD drive for use with Windows 7. Some components work fine using Vista SP2 drivers, but some will need an update to work with Windows 7.
This Microsoft site might help verify if your DVD drive is compatible with Windows 7:
- If you need clarification, ask it in the comment box above.
- Better answers use proper spelling and grammar.
- Provide details, support with references or personal experience.

The jumper settings on the rear of the DVD drive; set the jumpers to "cable select" mode (if you are uncertain how to set the jumpers, check the documentation that came with your drive or look for a diagram printed on the drive itself). Insert your DVD drive into the selected drive bay and connect the IDE and power cables. Use the screws that came packaged with the drive to secure the component to the drive bay.
Here is a link for upgrading to Win 7: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19356108.aspx If you can't boot form the CD/DVD you have a problem with your CD/DVD drive. If you can enter the BOIS (setup menu) then your computer is working, just waiting for a device to boot from.
it would probably be easier to just swap the hard drives. then when you go to boot, put in an OS install cd (Mac OS X ; Windows XP ; Windows Vista ; Windows 7) and it will walk you through the steps and partition your hard drive for you.
Here's what I would do. Download and burn any Linux disk. Install Linux and delete all partitions while doing so. After that, initiate the Windows XP installation and see if that works.
This will take care of two things:
If you can install Linux, then the hard drive is good and the partition that was previously on there will be deleted (I suspect the partition is locked which can be caused by a virus or the software used to scrub hard drive).
Check your CDs for Windows (for scratches) or it could be your actual CD drive is out (laser) which would make the installation fail. If the CDrom cannot read the disk, it locks up like that during installation...even if it read before.
You can download the drivers from dell website, download.com, and many other sites. Download, then double click on them to install them. Once installed, reset pc.
The 4600 has PowerDVD to play DVDs (You should have the software CD to install it on the 3000) DVD burning software would be Roxio/Sonic, and you should have that CD too.
If you don't have the CDs, then try download.com to download Free player software and Burning software
Place the windows cd in the drive and re-boot.You should be prompted to press any key to boot from the cd.After that, just follow the on-screen instructions. It's really pretty simple!Hope this helps!
If you mean you need to install windows, you need to set your cdrom drive as first boot device in advanced bios settings or it will try to boot into a non-existent windows.
Make sure your hdd is showing as the master drive, save settings and exit bios.
Re-boot pc with windows disc in cd drive and hit enter when prompted to boot from cd.
My Processor is 3 GHz
RAM is 2 GB
