Hi again, after extensively searching I believe your Laptop has a USB version 2.0.

Most PC's manufactured before 2001 were USB 1.0 and USB 1.1.

The Spec Guides for your PC indicate 2002 was the year of manufacture.

USB 2.0 is a faster USB connection than version 1.0 or 1.1. You might have trouble connecting devices that are USB 2.0 (which all new devices are now - since 2001).

To double check, use your Device Manager on the PC to look up the USB device and see what is written.

If you are using XP then do the following:

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Settings
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. In the Control Panel double-click the Systems icon.
  5. In the System Properties window click the Hardware tab.
  6. In the Hardware tab click the Device Manager button and you will see a list of devices.
  7. Click the + button next to the word the Universal Serial Bus controllers.
If it is USB 2.0 then it should say something like USB Enhanced or USB High Speed, this means it is USB 2.0 compatible.

I hope this helps. Please rate. Regards,

contratek

I don't know if the computer has a usb port

If it's a Presaio 1200 series as you say in the topic title, then you're in bad luck.

That's a really old laptop and does NOT come with usb support.

Regards.

Does a compaq presario 5000 support flash drives

Yes, it does.

The Compac Presario 5000 series have between 2 and 4 USB 1.1 Ports.
Note here that the ports are version 1.1, which is considerably slower that version 2.0.
USB 1.1: 12 MBits/second
USB 2.0: 480 MBits/second

Aside form the speed, they are both compatible with your computer.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

Broken USB Port compaq presario v5000

The hardware USB ports are identical for both versions. Only the software and hardware controller are different.
I suggest you use a temperature controlled soldering iron with a fine tip for this job.
You need to dismantle the laptop completelt to remove the motherboard from the plastic case. Take a note of where the screws come from because they may be different lengths. Don't apply excessive pressure on the plastic case else it will break, start from one side and work around each side, the plastic case has catches to hold the halves together.
Start by rmoving the hard drive, CD/DVD drive, battery etc.

Usb ports for laptop

Depending on if it has type I or type II PCMCIA slots, you can get a PCMCIA cardbus USB adapter.

They are relatively cheap on Ebay - about 7 bucks.

Just make sure you get one that is the correct card type, and comes with Win98 drivers.
