If the generator is out of warranty, you can try spraying a short shot of ether into the intake of the generator as it is running rough. If the engine smoothes out for a few seconds, and returns back to original state, then it is likely running lean. Check the gas regulator (this is LP or natural gas I am assuming since it is standby), the vent may be clogged on the bottom of it.
I have a similar problem with my 14KW model. It is brand new and is misfiring. It runs on LP. I suspect it is running lean, but I can find no way to make the fuel mixture richer. The regulator does not have any type of adjustment screw.
Several regulators have been used even for same model of generator. Some have a center disk that can be removed and there is an adjustment under the disk. One way, screwing in, causes output pressure to increase. The other way, screwing out, causes it to decrease. Higher pressure means more fuel to the carburetor. Before messing with the regulator, take a *unlit* propane torch, turned on midway, and hold torch so the propane is sucked into the air cleaner on the carburetor. If engine runs smoother, then it is likely running lean. If engine runs rougher, then it may be running too rich.
