Hi, Just purchased some second hand 1210 Mk 5s. Appear in good condition, no obvious damage, however the sound is terrible. Tried two different carts and new needles(which work fine on my old decks) yet the sound is quiet, muffled and generally poor quality. I used the same record/mixer set up. Any ideas/help much appreciated. Cheers
If the cartridge is good and your wiring is good. Then it's either got to be a fault on your amp, or there is a pre-amp in the deck itself faulty. Double check that the amp is working, amps have a pre-amp for record decks, they cause trouble a lot.
If you touch the wires that connect to the cartridge, you should get a buzz on either channel (remove them from the cartridge first). If you don't get a decent buzz, and you know that the amp is working fine, then there's something inside the deck causing the problem. In which case take the bottom off and take a look inside.

The tape has obviously suffered damage and the cause is probably the internal mechanisms require service or replacement.
You can't repair the tape other than cutting out a damaged section and splicing together, not a good option.
I'd try running the footage through a Time Base Corrector to clean up the signal. In many cases this can restore unwatchable footage.
Being the older model, the chances are that the drive belt on the Mk2 turntable has got worn and shiny with use. It may also have stretched a bit. If you are using the tables for 'scratching', the fact that you are holding onto the turntable when the motor is running is placing a strain on the belt that it is not really designed for.
I would recommend changing the belt - you can easily find spare belts for sale on the internet
Double check all your cables. The only 2 things that affect sound on the 1200s is the RCA cables and the tonearm. I would first replace the RCA cables to a better quality set.
Doubt it, ive heard of this problem before, usually people buying them second hand and the answer has always been get them repaired professionally, i dont know the reason for them doing it sorry.
