Have I lost all my info?

I have a WD Caviar - WD2500. It worked fine and I was using it a main drive on my network that I am setting up at home. It crashed earlier today after I put a BUNCH of information on it. I had not gotten to back it up as yet. A lot of music files. The computer seems to know that I am plugging the drive in but I can't get the device to start. Have I lost everything on it or is there a way to recover my files or better yet, get this device working again?

Thanks for your responses guys. I do not hear a clicking sound nor do I seem to hear the drive spinning. I am running Win XP. The PC recognizes that the Mass Storage Device has been plugged in but it won't go any further. I can accept that there may be something wrong with the drive. BUt I absolutely can't go through months of work converting the files again. Gotta be a way to get them off. Maybe I will take it to Best Buy or something.

Remove the hard disk from the computer and put it in a zip lock bag to prevent condensation. Put it in your freezer at the coldest temperature setting.

Wait for a few hours and then connect it back quickly to your computer. it will only work for a few minutes so try to get any important data out.

This is a quick fix for a certain type of problem with caviars like the clicking sound.

OR

you may have just corrupted the partition table of the hard drive.
search for repair partition table on google.
i usually use a linux install disk to repair it since there is a utility that comes with it that can edit that part of the hard drive.

Can you hear the hard drive spinning up ?

if so you can check it using a hard drive diagnostics tool
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287#wdc

If its a hardware problem you can try replacing the logic board. You can get one on ebay or you can get one off of another working hard drive (hard drive must be of the same make/model).

Dead hd wd caviar 80 gb

Is the "dead" hard drive 80GB? or 500GB?
I presume you set up this hard drive as the second hard drive, or as an external drive. You can do these:
1. Disk Management (check the readablility):
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management (please run as administrator; right click it), Disk Management. Is this hard drive info exist in this screen? If it is, then the hard drive is not dead.
Click on the hard drive info, right click, and you can do some actions (format, expand the volume, assign a drive letter, etc.)
2. If necessary, test and fix it using Norton Utilities (download and run it):

WD drive won't work as master when Seagate 80GB drive connected as slave.

Hi,

The jumpers on the Seagate must be set to slave.

otherwise they are conflicting for the Active partion and bootloader.

Installed more ram and now can't find the hard drive

Pull out the new RAM chips and install the old one or ones and see if it boots ok. I had this same problem. This can also be caused by no using matched sets of RAM chips. In my case I added one and used the factory one as well, caused the same issue as you have.

WD Caviar SE 16

Have you installed it as the main drive, ie the one with the ops system on, or have you installed it as a secondary drive? Either way, check you have the drive set up correctly as per instructions on pack. You are not alone with this problem either, it is common with WD. Come back to me with more info re your install.

Personally, I would set it up in an external enclosure and access via USB. Much more realable that way, and it is portable for you.

Can't connect

you may need a new drive. Take it to a data recovery place(Phoe book) and get the musicoff of it, then put it on a new drive.
