I have a WD Caviar - WD2500. It worked fine and I was using it a main drive on my network that I am setting up at home. It crashed earlier today after I put a BUNCH of information on it. I had not gotten to back it up as yet. A lot of music files. The computer seems to know that I am plugging the drive in but I can't get the device to start. Have I lost everything on it or is there a way to recover my files or better yet, get this device working again?
Remove the hard disk from the computer and put it in a zip lock bag to prevent condensation. Put it in your freezer at the coldest temperature setting.
Wait for a few hours and then connect it back quickly to your computer. it will only work for a few minutes so try to get any important data out.
This is a quick fix for a certain type of problem with caviars like the clicking sound.
OR
you may have just corrupted the partition table of the hard drive.
search for repair partition table on google.
i usually use a linux install disk to repair it since there is a utility that comes with it that can edit that part of the hard drive.
Can you hear the hard drive spinning up ?
if so you can check it using a hard drive diagnostics tool

If its a hardware problem you can try replacing the logic board. You can get one on ebay or you can get one off of another working hard drive (hard drive must be of the same make/model).

Thanks for your responses guys. I do not hear a clicking sound nor do I seem to hear the drive spinning. I am running Win XP. The PC recognizes that the Mass Storage Device has been plugged in but it won't go any further. I can accept that there may be something wrong with the drive. BUt I absolutely can't go through months of work converting the files again. Gotta be a way to get them off. Maybe I will take it to Best Buy or something.
