Hello ilay,

This procedure is from the Brother FAX-4100e FAQ link:

Storing Speed Dial numbers:
You can store Speed Dial locations on your machine(*). Once you have programmed the Speed Dial number on your machine, you can dial the number by pressing Search/Speed Dial, #(Pound Sign), the Speed Dial number, and then Fax Start.
*The number of locations you can store varies by machines. Please refer to the User's Guide for your machine. The latest User's Guide is available in the Manuals section.

To store Speed Dial numbers follow the steps listed below:

1. Press Menu.
2. Press the left or right arrow key to select Fax and press Set.
3. Press the left or right arrow key to select Set Auto Dial or Set Quick Dial, and press Set.
4. Press the left or right arrow key to select Speed-Dial and press Set.
5. Use the dial pad to enter the location (Speed Dial number) where you wish to store the number and press Set.
6. Enter the number you want to store (up to 20 digits) and press Set.

Note:
If you want to enter a pause in the dialing sequence (to wait for an outside line, for example), press Redial/Pause as you're entering digits. Pressing Redial/Pause enters a 3.5-second pause when the number is dialed, and a dash appears on the screen. If you need a pause longer than 3.5 seconds you can press Redial/Pause as many times as needed.
7. Use the dial pad to enter the name or company name (up to 15 characters) and press Set.
If you want to store the number without a name, just press Set.
8. Return to STEP 5 to store another Speed Dial number or press Stop/Exit to exit the menu.

Hello, We can receive faxes but can no longer send faxes from our HP laserjet 3390. The display window shows a 9 infront of the number we are trying to fax, dials that number and then does not complete...

You have to go into the settings on the fax machine. There will be an option for a prefix number. Someone put a 9 in there. Having the 9 in there will make it dial a 9 then the number you are trying to faxt too. Remove the 9.

When dialing number it is giving a "wrong number" signal

As you said, the set up is either trying to dial a "9" or other number to access an outside line before dialing your destination number. You will need to get into the menu and delete that command. After that, you should be able to dial out.
Remember to have the fax set to "FAX" not "TELEPHONE" to send and receive automatically.

I place my paper that I want to fax in the fax machine, dial the number that I want to fax, push start, it scans the paper, I hear the fax tone and at the end I get a Beep Beep Beep and the report sending...

1) did you dial correctly?
2) are you in an office or in your own home?

a) if you are in an office, you may have to dial a 9 or someother number to dial out before you can type in your original fax number.

b) if you are in your home, then its a number of things: Fax machine not connected with phone lines properly is one big supect. Check your phone cables to make sure that the fax machine is properly connected.

Hey Logjam

Is the fax line an extension off a PBX? If it is, you need to insert a 9 in front of the number. If you have to dial a 9 from your phone to dial out, then your fax machine may also have to dial the 9.

Brother faxes 8360P and 8000P - how do I progamme the machine to dial a 9 before each number please ? as my machines are connected to extensions on the PABX. Thanks

As I'm aware you can not program a number before every number you use. However you can progam the one touch or speed dials you can enter the 9 before the numbers. On some systems thay may need 9 then a pause then the number.
