Try holding the 'fn' key and hitting f5 after the external monitor is connected.
This should toggle through the internal / external / both monitor selections.
Those key are on the same contact branch inside the keyboard - hardware defect. The keyboard is dead, it will have to be replaced.

Possible you have a stuck key. Check the Del button, tap it and around it several times sharply, dont break it.. Maybe some crumbs in there? Sticky soda pop? Blow out under keys with a can of air. Also look at F10 and F2 and F12.

I just bought an HP G60-230US so I am not sure if this will work for you but on my computer, you have to press the "fn" key along with whichever volume key you are trying to use.
