This seems dumb but I had this same problem and finally resolved mine.
i determined that the usb cable was not being recognized.
I looked at the cable connection to the printer and realized i had it upside down. It seems to be plugged in correctly but its upside down and no connection is made.
check the configuration of the cable end and make sure it aligns with the printer.
Program should now detect the printer.
Sometimes its the simple things.

Found the answer and wanted to post it for everyone else running into this.
1 - Unplug Network CAT 5 and USB cables from printer.
2 - On the printer find the menu button and choose "Maintenacne/Settings" and then choose "Device Settings" where you will then choose reset settings."
3 - On your PC goto the Start menu and choose control panel. In the printer control panel find the Canon Printer and right click it and choose delete (you may need to cancel all print jobs in the queue).
4 - On your PC goto Device Manager (Start/Right click on My Computer (or whatever name your PC is called) and choose properties. Then choose Device Manager. Scroll to the bottom and expand Universial Serial Bus controllers" and count the number of items listed.
5 - Now carefully plug your USB cable from your PC into the Canon's USB port. Be sure to turn the printer around so you can clearly see the USB port. If you accidently put it in one of the other 3 jacks you might think it is in, but it isn't.
6 - Turn on your printer and closely look at your deivce manager and verify that Windows (xp, vista, 7) see your printer being detected. You should see at least 3 new USB connections including USB Printing Support.
7 - In your control panel select printers, right click in an empty area of the listed printers and choose add printer. Windows should now autodetect your printer and let you install the drivers for it. You may want to go to Canon's website and make sure you have the latest drivers and firmware for the printer.
