My garmin 205 seems to have lost its fix. Its position is out by about 100m, tracking established roads but to one side or other then loses roads altogether then gets totally lost. Is a map update likely to cure it ?

Do a hard reset on your GPS. Download and install Garmin Express from Garmin. Plug your GPS into your computer. The software will identify your GPS and allow you to download new maps to it.

follow the steps below:

1st: make sure your NUVI is OFF then plug in the usb cable from the computer to the NUVI, after you hear your computer ding from new device connected, and the NUVI displays the computer icon move to step 2

step 2: if you have xp go to START and MY COMPUTER. with vista its START then COMPUTER button on the right side

step 3: with MY COMPUTER window open hold the NUVI power switch to the ON position and RIGHT CLICK the NUVI device logo (blue triangle) and select EJECT .. ( DON;T HIT SAFiLY REMOVE)

step 4: when you see GARMIN display on the screen you can letgo of the power button on the NUVI ****** if you unplugthe usb it will display message stating EXTERNAL POWER LOST SWITCHING TO BATTERY POWER***** while it is plugged to the computer the battery meter will disappear.

Losing gps signal and poor tracking are indications that the firmware / system software inside your GPS need updating.

There are three steps to take to get your Nuvi 265W running like new:

1. Back up your Favorites.
2. Perform a Hard Reset.
3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

Try this. You'll lose all your favorites and anything else you have entered though.

Turn off Garmin device. Press down on bottom right corner of the touchscreen, and then power on the GPS unit. You should be prompted whether do you really want to erase all user data, or asked if do you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press “Yes” to reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost, so backup before proceeding) or enter maintenance mode.

If it is new and bought recently you should return it to the seller for replacement or attention. You coulod first try to recalibrate the screen. if that does not fid it return it quick before any 30 day rteplacement warranty expires.

Try turning off the Lock on Road option, on Map Setup page, General Tab.

There is a button cell soldered to the main circuit board that powers the real-time clock while the unit is off or the main battery is removed or flat. After a couple of years this button cell dies and has to be replaced. I've had this problem twice in five years, and each time replacing the button cell fixes the problem.

Needs a Garmin workshop, or someone who's good with a fine-point soldering iron.
