There are two possible problems. Bad wire or wrong wire.

A router to PC connection requires a straight through cable, since the short cable works we know that it is a straight through cable.

Take a close look at the writing on the wire see if it says what type it is (straight through, crossover, rollover, etc). If it doesn't say what type it is:

Take both of the wires and hold them next to each other with the prong facing up.

Look carefully and see if the 8 wires inside are in the same position for the long wire as they are for the short wire. If they are you know you have a bad wire. If they aren't your long wire is likely a crossover wire.

If this answers your question please help me out and leave feedback!

Thanks and good luck!

Cant remember the wep on my net gear wireless router

Use a computer that is working with the router, wired or wireless.. Then login to http://192.168.1.1 or http://routerlogin.net

enter admin for username and password for password. Once logged in, click Wireles settings on the left panel.
You will see Security option, this should show WEP if the router is really using WEP, then you will see key 1,2,3,4 boxes underneath, whichever is selected and has the series of characters, that series of characters is youe WEP key. Make sure not change any settings as it will affect other wireless devices currently connected.

Can only connect 1 computer to 'net on router

rourke, you shouldn't be entering the same settings on both router and desktop. I should only be on the router. It seems like something with DHCP is misconfigured on your router. Make sure it (DHCP) is enabled.

WRT160N router, no internet

Ok, I have the same router, and have had all sorts of troubles with it.  I found the best solutions to be found on the website (i think its linksys.com or something like that).  If you are using a security enabled network, make sure you are entering your WEP key in the correct format.  Other than that, I'm really sorry that I cant help much further.

Cant Aquire IP Address Wirelessly

try this... connect the laptop directly to the router using a cable. get into the router interface and disable the wep security. Once it is disabled try connecting the laptop. your computer will ask you that network is not secured and ask if you want to connect anyway. just connect your laptop without the WEP key, if it connects, just go ahead and enable the security again. hope this helps.

Routers

You may simply have incompatibility issues, there now where near as problimatic as they used too but still exists. First off make sure that when you try to connect that you have the right security settings, (if used the disk from the router or had somebody install it you should have written it down). When configuring your router always do it with a hard wire connected so as you don't drop yourself every time you change a wireless setting.
Take your laptop to a free wifi hotspot as way to make sure that your wireless card actually works. But if you can see your network it sounds more like a security setting issue.
