I had a HDD failure. I replaced the HDD with a WD1600AAJB HD. I am running win98se on this unit and had reinstalled win98 and some programs after the initial boot. I am now unable to boot and have been getting CMOS checksum error, pressF1 this then moves on to as far as the system config screen where it checks everything, but it only progresses as far as the master HD coming up with CHS,UDMA,33, then stops. In BIOS if I try to set up hard disc it hangs with a figure 2 in the display. On initial start up it will pick up the model of the HDD and the cd drives etc. This HD does have a 8mb cache, would this be a problem? Help me please, Regards Mike

The most common cause of checksum errors in CMOS is a battery that is losing its power. You should pull the cmos battery and check its voltage with a volt meter. (It should read no less than 2.6 volts DC though 3.0 is recommended). Or just replace the cmos battery altogether. Viruses can also affect CMOS settings.
After checking the cmos voltage and or replacement of the cmos and while the system is powered down. Remove the system memory for about 1 minute. Doing this will remove any possible memory resident virus’s.
Download Western Digitals; Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (Floppy) or Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD)
WD's web site;
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?modelno=WD1600AAJB&x=6&y=7
Use this software to setup you're hard disk drive.
You can also test the drive for errors and much more. Both of the above, floppy or CD are bootable and work in DOS mode. (Keep in mind all data will be erased). This is the best way to setup you’re hard disk drive before installing windows on it.

Cheers'
Mike

Hello there, it seems you broke the TCP/IP stack, i recommend, remove all networking components in Control Panel -> network and reinstall all of them, second i strong recommend upgrade to a new S.O. Win9x have several security flaws easy exploited by bad guys what can not be fixed.

I have an old laptop that partition and hd have been reformatted. I've tried using boot disk but keep getting the message that says, ''save to disk partition not found. So, can't get win98se to load as...

Haven't used win98 for a while so bear with me and this uses DOS COMMANDS too.
If useing restore cd/floppy you have to use a utility from compaq that creates two partitions on hard-drive.
They may have a restore floppy if you need it too.
One for "recovery files" and one for "OS Boot"
AHH, the memories, I still have my 95/98/ME Laptops up and running for older stuff. HP n CQ too.
Restore CD should do it all though.
If no restore CD - have Win98 CD?
if Harddrive partitioned and formated - Just do 1
1. boot from Win98 CD.
Partition n Format
2. Choose boot to DOS (puts u in virtual drive A)
AT PROMPT
3. Type drive letter of CD ( C: D: or E: )
4. Type CD Win98
5. Type Fdisk ( to partion drive)
reboot n do 1 + 2
6. Type format C: ( I do this to ckeck drive for errors)
OR
JUST Boot from CD and follow install instructions.
1 to 6 for if you have problem with Win98 CD setting up Harddrive.

Win98se i did it ... HERE'S HOW

OK, I bought this Western Digital MyBook 500 GB Essential Edition too, and could not get it to work with Windows 98 SE.

I followed the above instructions, but my version of windows was missing even the drivers suggested above! UGH!

HOWEVER, I found ANOTHER SOLUTION. I installed USB 2.0 drivers for mass storage and the the MY BOOK icon popped up on my Windows 98 SE machine. Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Here are the drivers from this british webpage:

Good luck to all you frustrated folks scooping your info off Windows 98 machines!

Camera wont connect to my computer

here are the ioerating instructions for your

Panasonic Lumix DNC-FX12

Page 81 describes the installation process and only Win98 and Win98SE seem to require special software installs for the camera. What operating system are you running on your computer? Was it the original operating system or was it upgraded or reinstalled? If so you may be missing some drivers -- like USB drivers the camera may need please provide he manufacturer and model of your computer so we can begin a search for possible missing drivers in a comment to this message. IF your operating system is not Win98 or Win98SE even if it was not reloaded or updated you should consider providing the manufacturer and model of you computer because you may require updated drivers.

This is not a sure solution but investigating the driver situation could be a step in the right direction.

Thanks

Format a corrupt system without 98 bootable

Hi,

Basically yes. You need to remove the HD from the PC without any bootable devices and install it as a slave to a second PC preferably also Win98.
You can then proceed to format the HD (as FAT32) of the 1st PC on the 2nd PC. Sys that HD to transfer system files and make it active. To facilitate installation of the OS, create a folder on that HD and copy the Win98SE installer files into it. Remove that HD from the 2nd PC and reinstall on the 1st PC. Power and it will boot into Dos.  Go inside the folder where the OS installers are and run "setup".

Alternately, you can just clone the HD of the 2nd PC to the corrupt HD of the 1st PC after format  /s. Just make sure that you still have the Win98SE installers copied to the corrupt HD.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things went or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
