Circuit City currently haas some really great deals on the hitachi 500GB 7200/16 MB 2.5 Mobile Sata HD for approx $90 with no shipping fee. Simply to install and works like a charm. I have replaced about 6 of the original Toshiba hard drives in the past few months and not had a single complaint only complimentary feed back about the Hitachi replacements. Its worth looking into.

Laptop keeps restarting after getting to icons then reboots again. chkdsk never completes index check .
the HDD is bad.
even a 3 foot drop , is 100 G force, ends it.
if turned off can take taller drop.

run the linux disk test, if that fails HDD is dead.
like most this old

boot to ubuntu (free) live CD
run disk test, ( or from uSB stick booted to Linux live)
if that test fails, the HDD is end of life.
or the smart test shows the errors in this link

Go to Windows Explorer and Right Click on the HDD (C: drive) then go to properties this will tell you the size of the drive and give the amount of free space available as well.

  1. Remove the real-time clock (RTC) battery.
  2. Wait approximately 5 minutes.
  3. Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the notebook.
  4. Connect AC power to the notebook. Do not reinsert any battery packs at this time.
  5. Turn on the notebook.
