I have an older Flair model. The internal plate broke - it seemed to be made of glass. I threw it away several years ago. Cleaning a closet today, I found the Flair air purifier and am interested in purchasing the plate that broke if it doesn't cost a bazillion dollars. Any idea where I might find this part?

It's attached to the pulse radio-wave ionizer. It comes on when the unit is on to show the radio wave is working. It's not needed and I've never seen a replacement but Radio Shack could probably help you replace it if you wanted.
What's burning is probably your high voltage transformer. When your glass plates get a crack in them, they will spark. You probably have a burned out high voltage transformer. That's what produces the ozone. Helpful hint...........the high voltage transformer is also the one used in bug zappers
Open the back and change the Ozone plate. then slide out the ION plate and clean it with denatured alcohol. If no light inside, you may have to replace the bulb and / or starter. Hope that helps.
The ozone plate will not cause the sanitizer button to not work but it may have caused the button to short out. The sanitizer switch probably needs to be replaced. The plate definitely needs replacing, when there is a crack in the plate it causes an electrical arc which is burning the black line onto the plate. Please remove and throw away that plate.
The black residue is what is in your air. The reason for it to cling to the walls is the Ionization process that the machine creates. The ionization is to create a clean breathing space, free from contaminants. All particles floating in the air will be negatively charged and cling to each other or to objects in the room (like walls) that are positively charged.
If you cook, there is some smoke created, or when you burn candles. These greasy particles will stick to the wall or to surfaces. Cleaning them up regularly might help. You can also try another product from EcoQuest called EcoH which is based on enzymes and cut through that grime easily. That might take the black stuff off the walls.
I haven't seen an older Flair that I know of. There will be as many slots for plates as are required. The filter is definitely washable. Use an enzyme cleaner and rinse with hot water. The fan motor should be oiled every month or two. It should cost less than $100 to get it running in top shape.
You need to order two ceramic plates and a lint filter. The lint filter is the one that goes on the back. The two glass plates are what ionizes the air. They do not make them from glass anymore. You will need to go to the ecoquest website nd order the parts. It will run you right about $75. Ecoquest bought Flair out a few years ago.
