If your computer is working and you want an external hard drive to save to-- open the computer and with the external hard drive switched off, plug in the usb cables. turn on the hard drive and the computer will recognize it as a plug in unit and search for the correct driver
it may ask for a disc for installation or search on line ( use the disc in the cd drive in the computer)
from there the wizard will install the external hard drive

Mycomputer does not recognizes the external disc it slows the computer and to advance y have to disconnect the external disc again.

Does this happen ONLY when connected to your computer,
or does this happen when connected to ANY computer?

If the former, it could be your anti-virus software that is scanning the entire contents.

If the latter, then the Toshiba itself could be the problem.

Cant restore computer...forgot administrator password and disc drive inop...what do i do.

If you have the restore discs, you may be able to use an external disc drive (i.e., USB).

If your BIOS will recognize it on startup, you will need to configure the boot order. A message should appear telling you what key to press when booting on your BIOS splash screen (you need to watch for it, it disappears quickly), generally this is F10 or something similar.

If your computer will not recognize an external disc drive, you may be able to get a new disc drive from Toshiba by calling their support.

Do I need a disc to install

This is a external hard drive and no need for you to install any software to a computer in order for it to work , this is a plug and play device you just need to wait for the computer to recognize it after you plug it to a USB port and once its recognize its ready to use.

Externals not recognized by computer.

Go to your control panel open up 'administrative tools' Open Computer management, then choose disc management instead of device manager. Make sure that you have the drives pluged in and connected before you do that. All connected drives formatted or not that are in working order should show up under disc management. If they are not showing up they are not compatable. Make sure that they are marked as active and format them if they need to be formatted. Do so by right clicking on the drive in the disc management window.
