My treadmill is making an extremely loud high pitch sound near the back of the unit. The belt is my guess but I don't know what to do. It gets louder and higher in pitch when I raise the speed. I think the belt may just need an adjustment but I have no idea how to go about it.

Could be a number of reasons - where is the black dust coming from? remove the motor hood and check for misalignment of the drive belt from motor to the front roller.

Unplug unit then remove motor shroud then plug unit in then start treadmill your going to use a flat tip screw driver as a stethoscope. Now place the flat on the motor at edge close to the flywheel put your on the handle your ear and you should be able hear if the loud noise form the bearing if not, then repeat procedure on the other end by the fan if the noise is pin pointed on the motor then replace motor, if not originating from the motor the proceed to the front roller.
Use a flash light and observe and locate the font roller shaft so that you can comfortably rest the tip without it slipping on either end of roller.
As before repeat the procedure that was performed on the motor if noise originated their then replace roller if not proceed to rear roller.
Use you flash light and look the adjusting bolts where the end caps are the proceed to insert the screw driver and make contact with the tension bolts listen to each side.
You should locate noise with this procedure take your time and be careful
No do not use, until YOU LUBE. This happen because you must do it every 5 hours aprox of use, The machine protect itself the electronic system and shut down.Maybe the deck belt is worn.

you describe a little more precise locations where the noise if it's a sound like diaper, the belt can be or could be the roller bearings please give me more information, or take it to where you sold it for a more thorough check
