Hello wricoms. Sc 492 means that one of the fans in the back of your copier is not working.Todays copiers monitor all kinds of devices that in the past was not possible. The fans for example provide a feedback to the dc controller board. if they are operating properly then the contoller board can"see" that power is being consumed as the current flows through the fan as it operates, kinda like the meter on the side of your home turns as electricity is being used. The controller board knows that it has supplied power to the fan(s) and expects to see power consumption as the fan uses energy. If no energy is consumed (the fan is not turning, therefore no curent is flowing hence no energy is being consumed) then to protect the copier an error is generated (sc 492) as a warning that this cooling fan is not cooling the device that needs to be protected from the danger of overheating. In this case the fan protects several cicuit boards. If you remove the back cover of the copier you will see two fans located next to each other. The one on the left cools the fusing system. The one on the right is the "offending" fan.By shear dust, crud, and wear these fans can lock up. You may be able to remove and clean this fan, perhaps lightly lubricate the axis point (center) of the fan. The part number for the fan is AX640080 if that does not work. But your copier is getting some age behind it and this fan works hard long and often to make sure that the circuit boards (which are far more expensive and catastophic when they fail) stay cool. Of course you know that to reset the code you must turn the main power off.Not the button on the operator control panel that says "MAIN POWER" (thanx MR. MANUFACTURER for the confusion) the power switch they are talking about is located close to your left knee on the side of the copier.Oh, and as a troubleshooting tool, you can actually swap the 2 fans as they are the same part number. If the potentially bad fan takes its ill temper with it,then after swapping fans and resetting the error code the problem should follow the bad fan.Which would cause your error code to change to an sc 490. Which means that now the cicuit board fan is ok but you suddenly have a problem with the fuse exhaust fan. Of coures we will both know that you dont have a second problem, you merely have moved the bad fan to a new location and the copier will notice a new area of fan failure. i know this has been awfully long winded to explain what's up.But most people would like to have s thorough an understanding as possible. I will conclude by saying this.I hav ebeen working on copiers and networked devices for over 20 years.I am not bragging, just lettin' ya know that I might be a decent source of info. At a minimum, I just want to try to help you out without you falling prey to "copier dude" with $ signs in his eyes. You will at least have a fighting chance to avoid being overcharged and over diagnosed by a business that is not always looking out for your best interest, just your checkbook. The info I have given you is straight out of my service manual. I haope I have helped at least some and you take care. If you see fit to return positive feedback when you comment on my help to you I would be appreciative.Good luck and take care............................SPINAL ********NOTE******** the part number I gave you comes from a SAVIN manual. Ricoh is the true manufacturer, and they own Savin. These part numbers should still be the same since the service manuals and part manuals are the same for both the parent company(RICOH) and its alternative brand they market.....Savin. Have a better day! :-)
